After nearly twenty years in the financial services community I found myself unemployed and once again trying to find that perfect fit back into the competitive workplace. But something occurred first which altered my perception of reality and forced me to change my previous way of thinking. My wife found a job first. This is my story and I hope others in my situation will read this and understand that as fathers and husbands our ultimate goal is to ensure the happiness and safety of our families. So we must travel this journey together and always have each others backs. If we don’t, who will?
Being the working father of two children is easy. When you arrive home the house is clean and the kids are fed. Easy, right? Then your wife will say it was a crazy day and you shake your head in agreement and give her a hug. Then you stroll off to the couch and turn on the ball game as you sit there you wonder what it was your wife just said. Anyway, it’s a lot different in the bunker than it is at headquarters behind the lines.
I still have a hard time believing that a fifty pound child can eat its own weight in food every day. I was always under the assumption that like the python they swallow a pig and you don’t hear from them again for a week. To my surprise they fall more under the heading of hummingbird. It’s a good thing they believe that pizza, goldfish snacks, p & j sandwiches & hot dogs are the four food groups.
Another thing about children is that they are very messy. They can be somewhat similar to a mini-tornado, or tasmanian devil as depicted on Looney Tunes cartoons. I once blinked and all of a sudden 300 toys appeared scattered across the living room. Someday science will prove that this isn’t possible.
After you have finished making the beds, cleaning the house, feeding the children, and taking your shower, there is still work left to do. Although using your free time to surf the internet and send out hundreds of resumes is fun, it’s not really monetarily beneficial. You have free time, us it!
I have been fortunate enough to be able to say I have found ways to make some extra money. One way is due to the fact that you are reading this article. There are thousands of websites that launch every day and they all need content. It is much too expensive to hire employees to do this so they go to cyberspace. If you are fortunate enough to have the gray matter necessary to put sentences together you can make a little extra on the side. The good thing is it takes very little to get started. You just need a computer, internet access, and a little initiative. You can write on any subjects you are interested in and it must may prove enjoyable.
I have also become partners with various professionals taking on projects that they either don’t like, or don’t have time to handle. If you reach out to some of them they may put an extra few dollars in your pocket for helping. Marketing, research and other areas are those that busy professionals like to have handled. Remember, you have much more time than you think if you can become efficient.
Build a website or write a blog. There are hundreds of thousands of people putting up websites and writing blogs every year. If there wasn’t any way to make some money at it, most people probably wouldn’t do it. Find a subject you are passionate about and get to work. Who knows, if it’s good enough you may do very well.
In conclusion, suffice it to say these are hard times on a lot of us. We are now facing situations which before were foreign to us but now we speak the language. We have to get creative. We have to stay positive and put our best foot forward. We owe it to our families and better yet to ourselves. I wish everyone of my stay at home Dads the very best of luck. We are all in it together.
