One of the few common complaints about the otherwise excellent Civilization series is that, unlike in most other turn based strategy games, every culture in the game has exactly the same advantages and disadvantages. In Civilization Revolution Firaxis responded to these complaints by giving different advantages to each of the 16 unique cultures. This feature makes the play experience different for each culture and subsequently each culture requires different strategies to succeed. The following tips will help you win Civilization Revolution when playing as the Zulu.
Early Game – The Zulu start with one of the biggest advantages in the game. Zulu warriors move at speed 2, rather than at speed 1. This means that Zulu warriors can explore twice as quickly. In addition, the Zulu get the advantage of an overrun when they have a 4:1 attack to defense ratio rather than a 7:1 ratio. This advantage is not one likely to benefit the Zulu in the early game, but can help at later times.
The best way to take advantage of your cultural bonus is to build as few warriors. Once your warriors start exploring, you will find good locations to settle, barbarian villages, friendly villages, and exploration locations more quickly than your opponents. Since this benefit is of limited use, you should focus your cities on research once you have exhausted the benefit of quick exploration. By focusing on research you can quickly move towards the medieval era.
Mid Game – The medieval era benefit of the Zulu is one of the best benefits of any culture in Civilization Revolution. Once you reach the medieval era, your cities start growing at a 50% faster rate. If you haven’t already settled a lot of cities, do so now. Since you explored your surroundings previously, you should have plenty of locations to place these new cities. In fact, because the improved growth rate is so powerful, you should continue to build settlers until you have absolutely no room left to build.
This population explosion will temporarily slow down your production and trade, but you will quickly recover and easily surpass your previous production and trade rates. Your production doesn’t matter too much, as long as you are protecting your cities, but your trade should be focused towards science. Your goal is to reach the industrial era as quickly as possible.
End Game – Despite your mid game push towards science, the easiest way for the Zulu culture to win the game is with a cultural victory. Your huge population will produce lots of culture as long as you build Temples and Cathedrals in every city. Starting in the industrial era, you will produce 50% additional gold which should provide you enough gold to rush most everything you need to build. This will let you even rush wonders if you devote enough cities to gold production. The result is that you should easily be able to get a cultural victory well before any other civilization.
If a cultural victory is not obtainable, your second best choice is an economic victory. Your large cities should easily produce a lot of gold and production, especially with your 50% bonus to gold production. In addition, once you reach the modern era, you can build Rifleman units at half cost, which will make it very easy for you to defend your cities while you are focusing on your economy. Only one city needs high production for an economic victory. Determine which city that is and defend it all costs, especially once you have reached 20,000 gold pieces in your gold reserves.
