One of the few common complaints about the otherwise excellent Civilization series is that, unlike in most other turn based strategy games, every culture in the game has exactly the same advantages and disadvantages. In Civilization Revolution Firaxis responded to these complaints by giving different advantages to each of the 16 unique cultures. This feature makes the play experience different for each culture and subsequently each culture requires different strategies to succeed. The following tips will help you win Civilization Revolution when playing as the Russians.
Early Game – The Russians have two of the weakest starting benefits of any civilizations. Russian cities produce one additional food on plains squares. This benefit is unlikely to matter much in the early game when grassland squares are plentiful. In addition, the Russians start with a map of the nearby area.
You can possibly take advantage of the second benefit if you see a significantly better starting location for your city than where the computer suggests for you. Given how unlikely this is, the only other benefit you gain from this is that you know where to send your first warrior. Without any particular advantage, your best bet is to create a warrior or two while growing your city. Due to the map, your warriors will be a little more efficient while exploring and you might gain an exploration gold bonus easily. Switch your city to science production after you have built your warriors and try to get to the medieval era as quickly as possible.
Mid Game – The medieval cultural benefit for Russians is spectacular. Loyalty basically makes your defensive units nigh invulnerable at this point in the game, especially if you build armies. At this point you should start building settlers and settling any nook or cranny you have access to. Preferably switch to the Republic government, if you can, in order to make settlers more efficiently.
While settling, keep an eye out for plains squares. At this point in the game you can easily take advantage of the additional food they produce. You should also try to make sure that your cities have a lot of trade. Strong defensive units mean that you can afford to focus on your infrastructure and mostly avoid warfare. At this point your research goal should be the Gunpowder technology, so that you can build Riflemen by the time you reach the industrial era.
End Game – The easiest victory for Russians to achieve is a scientific victory. Starting in the industrial era, you can build veteran Riflemen with Loyalty at ½ the normal cost. This allows you to easily produce nearly invulnerable defensive armies quickly while focusing the majority of your cities output on research. You will probably research the Mass Production technology and start building Modern Infantry right about when you reach the modern era. Take advantage of your half cost Spy units and build one in every city immediately. With Spy units and Riflemen armies or Modern Infantry armies to protect you, you will be safe from conquest. You should easily research Space Flight ahead of any of your opponents.
If a scientific victory is out of reach, your next best option is a cultural victory. The additional food from plains squares means you should have larger than normal cities. Make sure all of your cities have Temples and Cathedrals and build the Hollywood wonder if you can. Aggressive civilizations will not have the technology to defeat you if using Fundamentalism government and you will convert the cities of Communism government civilizations. Either situation is good for you and just like with the science victory you can focus entirely on infrastructure due to your ironclad defenses.
