As a busy, stay-at-home mom of two toddlers, I am always strapped for time. Unfortunately this usually means that I often skimp on treating myself to neccessary beauty treatments. Since at this stage in my life it is nearly impossible to find more time for myself, I needed to find a creative way to get to those neglected beauty treatments. So I got to thinking, why not use my time spent in the shower to accomplish some of those beauty treatments that I have been putting off? Here are some time saving beauty tips to get busy moms started on putting together their own shower time beauty routine. Remember, these are just ideas. As with any beauty routine, it should fit you and your specific needs. Of course you wouldn’t neccessarily do all of these extra beauty treatments each time you shower. Choose one extra treatment each time you shower.
Time Saving Beauty Tip: Wash-On SPF
Consider doing more in the shower than just cleansing your body and hair. Why not coat your skin and scalp with SPF protection at the same time? A company called Aquea Scientific has developed a wash-on SPF. Products containing their “fully functional, clinically proven, safety-tested Wash-On™ UVA/UVB sunscreen ingredient that can be added to soaps, facial cleansers, body washes, shower gels and shampoos” allow a busy mom to shower and shampoo while adding a protective layer of SPF to their skin and scalp. Look for the Aquea SPF or Wash-On logos on body washes and shampoos that contain this innovative sunscreen.
Freeze 24-7 Ice Shield Face SPF 15 is another product that allows a busy mom to wash-on SPF protection. None of these products is intended as a substitute for regular sunblock, but is instead an added layer of protection. So if you are one of those busy moms who are always slathering your tykes with sunblock, but neglecting to put any on yourself, this is a great option.
Time Saving Beauty Tip: Whiten Teeth
Apply a teeth whitener before showering and use the heat from the shower to help enhance the stain removing power of the whitener. Remove after showering. Be sure that the whitener has been left on for the recommended amount of time before removing. A great low cost tooth whitener to try is Crest Whitestrips. They have quite an extensive line in most price ranges.
Time Saving Beauty Tip: Exfoliate
Exfoliate and soften skin by using a cleansing scrub once a week on rough areas like knees and elbows. Apply a facial mask such as Clinique Turnaround Instant Facial Masque once a week to exfoliate your face while you shower. Apply the mask at the beginning of your shower, leave on for five minutes, massage into skin and rinse. Viola! A fresher complexion with virtually no extra time spent.
Time Saving Beauty Tip: Zap Those Zits
Zap zits while you shower with Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash in Pink Grapefruit. This shower gel uses salicylic acid to prevent breakouts on your entire body, especially commonly acne prone areas like your back, neck or chest.
Time Saving Beauty Tip: Moisturize
Skip the after shower lotion session and instead use a cleanser with added emollients. The Dove Body Wash with Nutrium-Moisture line are good products to try. The line’s claim to fame is that the products are specially formulated to moisturize skin up to ten layers deep. As an added bonus, it can be used as a shave cream as well.
Time Saving Beauty Tip: Multi-Tasking Products
Using a beauty product that can pull double duty is a great way for a busy mom to save time. Shampoo with added conditioner is probably the most familiar of these multi-taskers. My personal favorite is Pert Plus. It has a nice scent that works well for both men and women, meaning my husband and I don’t have to buy separate products. Pert Plus also rinses away clean with no oily residue left over from the conditioner.
Time Saving Beauty Tip: Find New Uses for Products
My favorite unexpected use for a beauty product in the shower is using conditioner as shaving cream. Coat your hair with conditioner and while waiting for the conditioner to work, use more conditioner to shave your legs. I often use Pert Plus shampoo plus conditioner so I lather my hair, leave it on, lather my legs with Pert Plus and then move back to my hair and rinse. Then I finish by shaving my legs. The conditioner in the Pert Plus works as well as any moisturizing shave gel I have ever used. And since I’m using one product as a shampoo, conditioner, and shaving cream, I’m saving money too.
