The Denver Broncos drafted Tim Tebow as the 25th pick of the 2010 NFL Draft. This seemed to shock both the media and NFL fans. All we have heard about Tim Tebow is that his success in college football will not transfer over to the NFL. We have been told repeatedly that Tim Tebow’s throwing motion is too drawn out and his style of play only works at the college level and below. If all that is true then why did Denver waste a first round draft pick on Tim Tebow. Could it be that Denver coach Josh Mcdaniels knows something that all the experts do not. The simple answer is YES! What Mcdaniels knows is exactly what you are about to read. Here are the three reasons Tim Tebow will succeed in the NFL.
TIM TEBOW WILL SUCCEED IN THE NFL BECAUSE OF THE SPREAD
The spread formation has taken college football by storm in the last few years. Although there are many different variations of the spread, the basic principle is to spread out the defenses to create a multitude of options to move the ball downfield. Usually this means that a team lines up with the quarterback in shotgun with four or five recievers spread over the width of the field. This causes the defense to spread out while leaving gaps to run the ball through. Of course if the defense attempts to close those gaps then one of the four or five recievers, which are too many to cover anyway, will be open for a pass downfield. The spread works best when you have a quarterback that can run and pass well. Tim Tebow perfected this very thing while playing for the Florida Gators under Urban Meyer. There has never been a quarterback more suited for the spread offense than Tim Tebow.
The problem here is that the spread offense has not dominated the NFL playing fields like it has in college. The prevailing opinion on why it hasn’t is because the defense backs and linebackers are faster and smarter than their counterparts at the college level. “The speed of the game is too much for the spread to work” we’re told. Of course a few teams, including the New England Patriots, have had success with variations of the spread. Most believe this is the exception not the rule. The Miami Dolphins have had success with the Wildcat formation, which is a spread variation, but that is just a gimmick “soup of the day” to most experts. All of these reasons are forced down our throats every day until we start to believe them. I’m going to challenge you to think about this a different way. The reason the spread doesn’t dominate the NFL is because teams don’t draft quarterbacks like Tim Tebow to run that offense. Spread quarterbacks like Tim Tebow are tossed aside or asked to play a different style of offense. However, that is all about to change. The spread is coming folks. Tim Tebow is bringing it. So get ready. This is the number one reason why Tim Tebow will succeed in the NFL.
TIM TEBOW WILL SUCCEED IN THE NFL BECAUSE HE IS A WINNER
The number two reason why Tim Tebow will succeed in the NFL is his versatility. Tim Tebow can wear any hat that Josh Mcdaniels needs him to wear. Tebow is not a drama queen or a primadona, he’s just a winner no matter the cost. In college the key to beating the Florida Gators was to stop Tebow from running and throwing the long bomb. We were told that Tim Tebow couldn’t make the short pass consistently enough to win a close game. The 2008 SEC Championship game proved this to be false. The University of Alabama stopped Florida’s running attack including Tim Tebow and took away the deep threats. Guess what? Tim Tebow then proceeded to win the game by throwing the short pass. Just because Tim Tebow doesn’t do something very often doesn’t mean that he’s not capable of doing it. Tim Tebow will be the best at whatever is needed to win a ball game. And that’s the reason why Tim Tebow will be successful in the NFL.
TIM TEBOW WILL SUCCEED IN THE NFL BECAUSE THE FANS LOVE HIM
We all like to pull for the guy that plays for the love of the game and not the money. We all like to pull for the guy who’s heart never gives up no matter the circumstance. We all like to pull for the guy who refuses to lose, even if he does every now and then. Tim Tebow is this guy. Tim Tebow will become a fan favorite because of his heart and iron will. This will make the fans either love Tim Tebow, if they’re Broncos fans, or hate Tim Tebow if they’re not. Either way, people will buy tickets, ratings will be high, and NFL owners will not allow Tim Tebow to fail. The reason is because it’s all about money, and Tim Tebow sells. Tim Tebow will be a rock star because of his play on the field and that’s just one of the three reasons that Tim Tebow will succeed in the NFL.
Love him or hate him. It makes no difference. Tim Tebow is coming and there’s nothing any of us can do about it. I predict that Josh Mcdaniels will be heralded as a genius one day soon as he and Tim Tebow celebrate their first of many Super Bowl victories.
