Hadn’t heard enough about Tim Tebow while he played at Florida? Sick of the mention of his name even before that ridiculous Super Bowl ad? Then how did the media onslaught of the 2010 NFL Draft (a.k.a. the Tim Tebow 2010 NFL Draft Pick Watch) grab you? And how about the shocker of Tim Tebow being picked in the First Round (because it is heart-stopping shocking that a national championship-winning, record-setting, healthy quarterback from a nationally ranked school gets chosen in the first round) by the Denver Broncos. Did you even know that there were other people being drafted in the 2010 NFL draft? Or that the 24 other collegiate standouts chosen before him had names? Still, there is hope that the Tim Tebow First Round/should have-shouldn’t have/NFL prospectus hype will die down…
Just don’t bet on it.
The most comprehensive article written on the subject of Tim Tebow mania and the hype surrounding a guy that broke and set countless records in his college career but was deemed by many pundits and ‘expert’ sports analysts as being no better than a fifth-rounder in the 2010 NFL Draft seems to have been presented by Lynn Zinser at the New York Times. The article not only covers the inanity of the Tim Tebow coverage but the seeming dismissal of overall #1 draft pick Sam Bradford by the St. Louis Rams. The article also addresses all the other sporting events going on in the world, like NBA and NHL Playoffs, that have gotten little press in the pass couple days.
But Tim Tebow has. And it continues, because not only did the predicted low pick in the 2010 NFL Draft have many keyboards chattering up until the First Round began Thursday but they never stopped. With every passing draft pick — Sam Bradford, Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy… — sports writers were still speculating when Tim Tebow would be picked. Those on Tim Tebow 2010 NFL Draft Pick Watch most likely completely shut down when the first syllable began with something other than the hard ‘t’ sound…
But when the Denver Broncos announced that Tim Tebow was their First Round draft pick, keyboards fired up with even more Tebow mania stories and articles — pro, con, anti, balanced, bio, speculative, you name it. From sporting news to regular news broadcasts, from newspapers to Internet blogs, Tim Tebow’s name led storylines. Although the underlying story seemed to be Tim Tebow’s being chosen in the First Round, the truth of the matter is that the only true shocker was that the First Round draft pick wasn’t made by the Pittsburgh Steelers to offset the misconduct allegations against Ben Roethlisberger with Tim Tebow’s uber-Christian image.
But Lynn Zinser made a slight error in that article. She stated that the “best news… was that Florida quarterback Tim Tebow was selected in the first round, sparing us from hearing about him for the next two days.” Instead of being spared on the second day of the 2010 NFL Draft, “hearing about him” only seems to have multiplied, maybe even exponentially. And now there is the bonus of hearing and reading about what a gamble/mistake/excellent draft pick choice the Denver Broncos made in the First Round.
Can’t this guy just play football without there being a deluge of media coverage (which includes his religion, his lifestyle, his girlfriend(s), his every uttered word, and his football playing abilities — and match-ups with others — in all their myriad forms). To give an example of the ridiculousness of Tim Tebow mania, the National Championship Game between Alabama and Texas was liberally sprayed with Tim Tebow references and comparisons and he nor his team were even in the game. And as Zinser pointed out, Tim Tebow’s pro-life Super Bowl ad got more airtime and press than Peyton Manning.
And what about Drew Brees? The Super Bowl-winning quarterback was on “The Late Show with David Letterman” Thursday night and —
You didn’t know that?
How about that Drew Brees is on the cover of Madden 2011, or the Madden Curse speculation, all of which began Thursday?
But I’ll bet you knew abut Tim Tebow’s First Round selection and being the Denver Broncos’ first pick of the 2010 NFL Draft.
There’s just no escaping Tim Tebow mania…
