In some countries you might need bottled water to stay safe and free from disease, but with those few exceptions, bottled water is bad. For years, designer water has been billed as something prestigious and desirable, when it is actually on healthy product in many ways. Here are three reasons why bottled water is bad:
Reason one: No fluoride. Bottled water is an unhealthy product for individuals because it generally lacks fluoride. While there might be some forms of fluorinated bottled water on the market, I have not seen them yet. The lack of fluoride is bad for people’s teeth, and especially for children’s teeth. In places where the public water supply lacks fluoride, children have to use fluoride rinses or other forms of fluoride supplements to protect their teeth; yet, by using bottled water, people are intentionally creating a situation where they will be fluoride deficient, and are generally not doing anything to compensate for the lack of fluoride. Misguided parents who think they’re doing their children a favor by giving them bottled water may be causing future dental problems. While there might be some sort of prestige to designer water, bottled water is bad for your teeth.
Reason two: waste of resources. The production of bottled water requires manufacturers bottles, expensive and energy consuming processing, and explication of natural water sources. All of these resources can I wasted on an unhealthy product. The cost of designer water, is therefore much higher than the retail price of the product — it also imposes a cost on the environment. Bottled water is bad for our environment, but it has become ironically popular among some environmentalists. People need to realize that bottled water is a complete waste of resources.
Reason three: snobby. The term “designer water” tells the whole story here. Bottled water still evokes an image of people who have money to blow. After all, people who buy bottled water are buying a generally unnecessary product at an unreasonable price. The third problem with this unhealthy product, and therefore, is that it makes the consumers who use it look like snobs. Why not just the normal water like the rest of us, and look like a normal person?
Bottled water is bad, even when we use euphemisms like “designer water” to refer to it. It is an unhealthy product because it generally lacks fluoride, wastes resources, and promotes snottiness. The water that comes out of your tap at a low, low cost is generally far superior to it.
