Even though it might never be read in detail by a potential employer, a resume is important for a job seeker. If I were to write a job seekers guide, I would devote a large part of it to resume preparation. I might even include some free resume templates, to correct some of the most obvious mistakes that job seekers make. Why is a resume so important? Here are three reasons.
Reason one: prove you are qualified. There are some people who get hired for prestigious jobs based solely on personal connections, but the rest of us have to prove to a potential employer that we deserve the job. A resume is important because it is the tool for doing this. In a well-crafted resume, job seekers guide potential employers through their work history, and demonstrate that they have all of the competencies necessary for the desired position. Some people prepare the resume using free resume templates, while others start from scratch. Regardless of the process, the resume must prove one’s qualifications.
Recent two: prove you care about the job. Job seekers guide potential employers not only through their work history, but also through their passion for the job. Failure to prepare a strong resume sends the message that you are not serious about getting the job. Thanks to the many free resume templates available online, it takes very little time to prepare a resume. A candidate who shows up without a resume was not willing to spend even that minimal amount of time, and presumably does not really want the job. A resume is important because it shows that you care.
Reason three: prove you understand the working world. A resume is important because it is part of the standard hiring process that everyone is expected to understand. Part of being professional and anything involves understanding the rules of the game. For the modern working world, these rules include the technical aspects of job seeking, such as resume preparation. If job seekers cannot understand the need to create a resume, what else do they not understand. Every job seekers guide in the bookstore will tell you to create a strong resume, and many of them provide free resume templates. You’d have to be quite oblivious to not understand that potential employers will expect a resume from you.
A resume is important for a job seeker because of all the things that it says about the person. This one piece of paper proves that you’re qualified, that you care about the job, and the understand the working world. Those are important facts for any potential employer to know.
