Three Baby Items You Don’t Want to Live Without

by itchy fish

During my first few weeks as a new mom, I was doing well if I did not spend the whole day in my pajamas. After awhile, I realized that there had to be a better way.

Certain things are essential to living like a human. Things like having food in the house, taking regular showers, and going out among people. Things we took for granted before can seem impossible to accomplish with an infant.

Eventually, I discovered that certain items, while not necessary, helped me return to a more human lifestyle. Here are three inexpensive baby supplies that will make your life as a new mother easier.

1. Some Place Safe for the Baby around the House

In an ideal world, mothers would be able to spend every minute of every day holding their cooing, smiling, happy infants. Most babies consider that to be a perfectly reasonable request.

Unfortunately, there are times, when it is difficult, if not impossible to hold your baby. Has anyone tried brushing your teeth while holding a baby? How about making lunch?

For those times when you really need your hands free, it is nice to have a safe, entertaining place for your baby to go. A baby swing, a vibrator chair, or a Pak N’ Play are all great choices.

2. Some Method of Baby Transportation

Staying inside the house all day, for weeks on end will eventually become miserable. Not only will going out be good for you, it will also be good for your baby. Babies get bored, just like the rest of us.

Consider the places in town you would like to go. Maybe a grocery store or the mall would be fun. Perhaps a trip to the park or the zoo would be amusing. Plan ahead how you will take your baby.

A baby carrier or sling is a great choice. They are relatively inexpensive, most babies will ride in one, and they are highly portable.

You will have at least one hand free, which is important for things like opening doors or buying groceries. Most importantly, it will be way easier on your arms and back than attempting to carry your baby everywhere on your own.

Another option to consider is a travel system in which the baby’s car seat will attach to a stroller. This is extremely convenient, since many babies fall asleep in the car. With a travel system, you will be able to wheel your sleeping infant anywhere you choose to go, without disturbing him.

3. Some Way for the Baby to Eat on the Go

While you are out having fun with your baby, you don’t want to have to stop and come home every time he needs to eat.

If you are breastfeeding, consider investing in a nursing wrap. I am not recommending nursing in very public places, but places like the car can be a discreet place to feed a baby, with proper use of a wrap.

If you are formula feeding, consider buying a formula dispenser and an insulated bottle holder for the diaper bag.

It may take a bit of time, but with the proper planning and the proper supplies, you can figure out how to take care of your baby, while doing things you need to do and enjoy.
