It’s that time of year again when the Quad Cities (Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa, and Moline, East Moline and Rock Island in Illinois) get ready for many annual events. Three events in particular stand out, and many people come from all parts of the country to take part in them:
Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
John Deere Commons, Moline, IL.
A fun race that helps fight breast cancer. Susan Komen Race for the Cure was launched when Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. That promise became the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. This is the Quad Cities’ 21st annual Race for the Cure. A great way to get your sister or mother out for some girl time and do something good at the same time.
The John Deere Classic
Fee: $18 a day
The John Deere Classic started on the PGA Tour in 1972. Golf lovers flock to this 4 day event in the Quad Cities. Every day holds a different round with the Trophy Presentation on the 11th.
Special bonus days: 6th-7th offers free admission and kid activities.
The Bix 7
July 24, 2010
The Bix is a 7 mile road race, accompanied with a three-day music festival. Held annually in Davenport, Iowa. The two events are named after jazz musician, Bix Beiderbecke, a native of Davenport. These annual events having been going on since 1971, and are still going strong.
The Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival is a great way to start your Bix 7 weekend. Jazz music can be heard as you walk up and down the downtown streets of Davenport. You can browse the local handmade items from the tent covered merchant displays, and enjoy a traditional food item from the food vendors also.
The whole family can get involved in the Bix. They have a Jr. Bix Friday evening for ages 5-12. Children receive a tshirt, medal, and a special Family Block Party.
The Bix Race starts early (8am) on Saturday morning and they have two route choices; the Quick Bix (2 miles), or the Bix 7 (7 miles). Prizes make it worth the effort, with the grand prize being a new vehicle from Lujacks. A fun event to go to even if you don’t run-watch for runners participating in the costume contest. There has been some pretty creative costumes in the past races.
Plan your summer now and make sure you include these annual events in your schedule-you won’t be disappointed.
