Thomas Mortimer IV has been found and arrested in Bernardston Mass. He was missing after his family was found brutally murdered in their Winchester Ma home, according to Channel 7 News in Boston. On Wednesday, the bodies of Mortimer’s wife and her mother along with his two small children were discovered in their Windsong Lane home. The police describe the scene as one of the most disturbing they have ever come across.
“It was horrific, disturbing, unspeakable, and the acts do not appear to be random,” reports Middlesex County DA Gerry Leone. The victims were 41-year-old Laura Stone Mortimer, her two children, 2-year-old Charlotte Mortimer and 4-year-old Thomas Mortimer V and Laura’s 64-year-old mother, Ragna Ellen Stone, according to Boston.com.
Thomas Mortimer could not be found after the discovery of the bodies of his family. He had called out sick from his new job on Monday and his boss had not heard from him again since that phone call. Mortimer had been out of work for a year and recently started a new computer software design position with a Mass company three weeks ago. His boss and co-workers called him a “great guy and a hard worker”.
The manhunt for Mortimer was massive, covering Logan airport along with bus and train terminals. Mortimer’s parents live in Avon Connecticut and the authorities said his parents had not heard from him when they went to their home for questioning yesterday. Officials staked out their house and the family’s home in Winchester on Windsong Lane in case Mortimer made his way back to either place.
Information on Mortimer’s capture has not been released yet, so it is unknown what he was doing in Bernardston Mass at the time of his capture. It is also unknown how the family was killed. All officials have said was that it was a very disturbing crime scene and they used the word “brutal” to describe the way the family was killed.
There was blood all over the inside of the home the victims were found in, this was reported yesterday by the fire fighters who broke into the house after relatives called them because they could not get in. When they opened the door there was a pool of blood visible along with blood on the wall and light switch. The fireman asked the relatives to let him go through the home before they did and once he did he ushered the relatives out of the entrance and back outside.
An arrest warrant was issued for Thomas Mortimer and he is facing charges in these four murders of his family. Neighbors and friends are beyond words and could not believe that Mortimer was capable of murdering his family. Mortimer’s mother did tell the investigators that Mortimer and his wife were having marital problems, but nothing that was serious.
The main question people are waiting to have answered was why? Why did a seemingly normal family man snap and allegedly kill his family? By all reports the Mortimer family was as normal as the next family. Why did Mortimer kill his family and how did he do this are things that have not been answered as of this writing.
