Check with current Staff Members
Wherever you want to apply, check with current staff members for openings. Many times they will know about future openings before the Principal. Personal contacts are better than phone calls. They might even be able to put a word in for you. Office secretaries are vital contacts. Impressing them can get your file placed on top of the stack.
Color attracts the idea. Do a cover letter that attracts attention. You can do the same with the top page of your resume. Make it appealing to the eye of the reader. An attractive business card also helps. Many times these are placed in a card index on the Principals desk.
Set up a Web Site
Like your cover letter, make it attractive. Be sure the site is listed on your card and resume. If your resume is lost or misplaced, they have access to your site. You only need one page. Don’t make it very detailed. If they have accessed your site, they are interested.
If you can, try subbing during the previous year or Spring. This will help you get your foot in the door. Pay attention to school demographics during your subbing days. You can learn a lot that might give you a better chance at future employment.
If a volunteer is looked for in certain areas, do so. This is another way to get noticed. Activities like reading to small children, library help, coaching, lunch duty, and being a chaperon can help you get noticed.
Check on the position availability from time to time. This shows that you have a strong interest in the position. Be patient, many jobs are not filled until August or before school starts. This is because the school doesn’t know what money they have available, until after the new financial year begins July 1.
Sometimes the best job might not be the job advertised. Teachers get moved around within the district. This opens up other possibilities. Many times, these are better positions. Stay flexible in your approach. Good luck,
