My favorite Stephens in Cinema, well there’s a long list but these two need a little acknowledgment. Stephen Rea is an amazing actor as is Stephen Dorf. They played in mainstream and independent films, and played all over the world. Here I chose eight of their best films and about what each is about.
1. Ondine (2009)
The movie is about an Irish fisherman who discovers a woman in his fishing net and he thinks that she is a mermaid. Stephen Rea plays the character Priest. Colin Farrell and Alicja Bachelede costarred in the film. If you really have to know Rea is mostly in Neil Jordan films.
2. In Dreams (1999)
In this film he plays Doctor Silverman. He’s a doctor for a crazed woman who keeps having dreams about deaths in her family. Annette Benning and Robert Downey Jr. costarred. Rea is certainly no stranger to weird films.
3. The Crying Game (1992)
Could someone say the best Stephen Rea film well I will definitely say this. This film is totally out there but totally wonderful. He plays the character Fergus. I don’t want to give away too much of the plot, because if you’ve never seen it is a great surprise. So here’s a simple outline, a British soldier is kidnapped by IRA terrorists. He befriends one of his captors, and then is drawn into the soldier’s world. Forest Whitaker and Miranda Richardson costarred in one of the best films of Neil Jordan.
4. The Break (1997)
Also known as A further Gesture.
Another IRA based film from Stephen Rea. He plays the character Sean Dowd, who escapes an Irish prison and makes his way to New York City. He finds out it was a bad idea to be in New York because a detective is hunting him down. Brendan Gleeson and Rosana Pastor costarred. Also if you have the movie channel (TMC) you can catch it on May 9th.
5. The End of the Affair (1999)
Here he plays Henry Mills. The film is about the novelist Maurice Bendrix who has a chance meeting with Henry the husband of his ex-mistress Sarah. Nowadays this sounds like a comedy or farce on love like the movie It’s Complicated and or what Van Wilder makes up. But this film is an intense drama. A harrowing tale of betrayal and passion.
6. Interview with the Vampire (1994)
Really I know his character had like what three or more lines. But still he deserves recognition. Few people knew that he was Stephen Rea, and the man from Neil Jordan’s The Crying Game. That he wasn’t just an after thought for Santiago, whom he plays. Neil Jordan knew what he was doing; he wanted to include his favorite actor to work with. I personally loved Santiago he gave an awkward and weird feeling to the film, when you first see him. That’s why Rea is such a good actor, he doesn’t always need a major role in a film to be loved or known. Ireland is lucky to have him. Well his costars like everyone probably knows are Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. The film is about the unlucky and depressing life of Louis.
7. Trojan Eddie (1996)
Rea plays a character named Eddie who is a small town crook. He discovers that his talent is selling anything and everything; basically he’s a good swindler. Until murder and mayhem come in the mixture, life was pretty good. Richard Harris and Stuart Townsend costarred in this thriller.
8. Still Crazy (1998)
One of the funnier films of Stephen Reas. He plays Tony Costello who was in a band called “Straight Fruit.” Well after twenty years he wants to have a band reunion, it’s a quite funny film. Billy Connolly and Bill Nighy costarred in this hilarious flick.
1. Cecil B. Demented (2000)
An insane comedy where Dorf plays Cecil an independent film director who with a group of teenage filmmakers kidnap an A-list actress and force her to star in their underground film. He just looks truly demented in this film. Melanie Griffith and Alicia Witt costarred.
2. Blade (1998)
He plays the sexy renegade vampire Deacon Frost, who wants to destroy Blade the half vampire and half human vampire hunter. It was based on the comic books. One of my favorite roles from Stephen Dorf, he played an awesome villain and vampire. Wesley Snipes and Kris Kristofferson costarred in this action flick.
3. I shot Andy Warhol
Here Dorf plays Candy Darling, a transvestite. Just to show how versatile he is he can play anything. The movie is about the true story of Valerie Solanas who was a 1960s radical. She preached hate against men. Well she wrote a screenplay and wanted Andy Warhol to direct it, he refused and she shot him. Lili Taylor and Jared Harris costarred in this biopic.
4. Blood and Wine (1996)
He plays the character Jason, who is Jack Nicholson’s stepson. A major role for him to be in with the great actor Jack Nicholson. The movie is about Alex Gates who steals a valuable diamond necklace with his Cuban mistress and partner Victor. Great noir thriller from the 1990s. Jenifer Lopez and Michael Caine costarred.
5. Cold Creek Manor (2003)
Stephen plays Dale Massie who terrorizes a family that moved in his house that he lost. A younger Kristen Stewart also is in this film that’s for all you twilight fans, she wasn’t just naive little Bella. Dorf’s performance was pretty top notched; he was good a playing crazed killers. Just look at how good his performance was as Howard in Public Enemies.
6. Den of Lions (2003)
He plays Mike Vargo a FBI agent who is undercover to bring down the Russian Mafia in Budapest. The great Bob Hoskins is a major player in this movie too. Even though it was straight to video I would say that it had a great plot, and a good cast. Probably not as popular as David Cronberg’s Eastern Promies about Russian gangsters, but who knows maybe someday it will have a cult following.
7. Deuces Wild (2002)
Besides Blade, this is another favorite role I love. He plays Leon who is a member of the street gang in Brooklyn known as the Deuces. After his younger brother dies from drugs, he and his gang make an effort to keep drugs off the streets. But when a rival gang the Vipers come things it out of hand it’s a war. The movie takes place in the 1950s too, and it’s a pretty gritty story. Brad Renfro and Norman Reedus costarred.
8. Botched (2003)
Stephen Dorf plays Ritchie who is a professional thief whose luck has just run out. He goes to Moscow, to steal a priceless antique cross. Well things go badly during the robbery Ritchie and his Russian accomplices are forced to take insane hostages and then their elevator is hijacked. What’s worse they are trapped by religious psychopaths. Dorf won best actor at the New York City Horror film festival and the film won best picture. Yes it’s a horror movie, the hostages are insane, there’s serial killers, and lots of dismemberment.
So that’s 16 films from the two Stephens, if you like one or both, then maybe this will guide you to a great film from two great actors. For more information go to www.theauteurs.com, they have a list of lots of Stephen Dorf and Stephen Rea movies, that’s what helped me and also www.Imdb.com helped me with writing about my favorite films.
