Zevia, a natural diet soda pop sweetened with the plant stevia, came out on the diet scene just after I finally kicked my soda pop addiction.
They say if you let something go and it comes back to you, it was meant to be. That’s how I feel about Zevia.
I will review each of the flavors of Zevia with stevia which can be found at Whole Foods Market and Health food stores across the country.
Their slogan is “Nature’s Answer to Diet Soda.” None of the flavors contain artificial sugar substitutes which are so dangerous for your health and waist line.
Many studies have shown people who drink diet soda with artificial sweeteners actually become fatter than people who don’t drink diet soda because the artificial sweetener tricks their body into releasing insulin – which raises their appetites. How many times have you noticed someone ordering a diet coke with a Big Mac and fries?
But many experts say stevia, which is native to tropical Central and South Americas, can actually regulate blood sugar levels. Stevia is found in the product Truvia.
Is it possible to have found a healthy diet soda in Zevia? Can this diet soda with stevia help you lose weight?
Here’s my take on each of the flavors which I have thoroughly tested as evidenced by the 500 cans carried out to the recycling bin in the past few months.
No. 1: Dr. Zevia. I’m starting with my favorite and the best flavor. My older son is a skeptic about Zevia but loves Dr. Pepper. I conducted a blind taste test with him, asking which one he thought was which and which he preferred. Much to his chagrin, he chose Dr. Zevia as his favorite, and was wrong about which was which. Dr. Zevia contains caffeine which rocks for me. The caffeine comes from coffee, tea, and the kola nut.
No. 2: Zevia Cola: My second favorite Zevia flavor is another that contains caffeine, also from natural sources. On the downside, the cola flavor is too sweet for me left as it is. I always add lemon juice, which reminds me of my Tab diet soda days in the 1970s.
No. 3: Zevia Ginger Root Beer: Also, a little too sweet, this is perfect for an indulgent drink with zero calories. Also, makes an excellent root beer float. For a light one, try frozen vanilla yogurt or low-fat vanilla ice cream.
No. 4: Zevia Black Cherry: This is the best of the no-caffeine flavors. It is crisp and refreshing.
No. 5 Zevia Orange: This flavor is a kid-friendly choice. Once in a while, I am in the mood for orange, but mostly I keep it on hand for the little ones.
No. 6 Zevia Ginger Ale: For me, ginger ale is a Christmas beverage. I enjoyed having it around the house for the holidays. It’s also a nice, comforting drink if you are not feeling well. I liked the taste of real ginger.
No. 7 Zevia Lemon Lime Twist: This is reminiscent of Sprite. I personally love to create a spritzer using Lemon Lime Twist with a splash of grapefruit juice. It also takes the edge off the “sweetness.”
It’s not surprising many of the flavors are very sweet, since Stevia is known as the “sweet leaf” of the rainforest. Stevia extracts are said to have 300 times the sweetness of sugar.
Ingredients found in Zevia line of products include the following: Erythritol (a sugar alcohol found in fruits and veggies), Stevia, Natural Carmel, Citric Acid, Natural Tartaric Acid, Natural Caffeine, Kola Nut Extract, Annatto, Ginger Root.
