The year of 2010 in sports has already seen multiple college champions crowned and the feel-good story of the New Orleans Saints end with a Super Bowl victory. The plethora of athletic highlights produced during the first year of the 2010s testifies to the varying ways in which players come by their fame; one finds it difficult to choose the most transcendent moments in such a year. No formula exists for the determination of the greatest moments, but the viewers of viral videos wield the ability to offer their modest opinions of the footage they behold. Here is one such offering: the top three viral sports videos of 2010.
#3: The “Fordham Flip”
Thousands have viewed the viral video of Fordham University baseball player Brian Kownacki leaping over the opposing catcher at home plate to score a run. Kownacki found himself staring down the catcher, giving him two options: slide around the catcher or railroad him to displace the ball from his glove. Instead, Kownacki invented a third option, flipping head-first over the catcher and touching home plate on his way down. The inventiveness of the play have made it tremendously popular, but it isn’t even the best baseball video of 2010.
#2: “Rain Delay Theater”
If Brian Kownacki’s flipping touch of home plate seemed creative, then the way the Florida Atlantic University Owls spend their rain delays is nothing short of brilliance. When the Owls and the Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers were forced to watch the rain tarp being drawn over the diamond during their match-up in Boca Raton, Florida, an awesome display ensued. The acts given by both squads displayed comedy and drama (among other things) in a wonderful potpourri of ingeniousness. The variety shown by both teams, as well as the sportsmanship required to civilly interact with opponents, makes this video a very special one.
#1: The “Miracle in Raleigh”
The University of Florida Gators men’s basketball team found it quite difficult to follow up national championships in 2006 and 2007, missing the NCAA Tournament altogether in 2008 and 2009. The Gators knew that they needed key non-conference victories to make the 2010 Tournament, making their clash with North Carolina State University a vital one. Junior forward Chandler Parsons knew the importance of the game when he rebounded a missed free throw and knocked down a 70-foot three-pointer to shock the fans in Raleigh and carry the Gators to a one-point victory in overtime. The length of the shot, the gravity of the situation, and the smoothness with which the ball went through the basket make Chandler Parsons’ miraculous game-winner the best viral sports video of 2010.
