When the ethically challenged Sen. Chris Dodd was forced to retire, yielding his place to Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, that was supposed to be the end of it. Blumenthal was ahead twenty points until last night.
But Richard Blumenthal has run into a little snag on his way to coasting toward an election as a United States senator. It seems that Attorney General Blumenthal has repeatedly Hot Air’s Allahpundit hclaimed to have been a Vietnam Veteran wherein fact he is not. Hot Air’s Allahpundit has a good roundup of the swirling scandal.
The problem is that Richard Blumenthal is not some guy in a bar with tattoos and too much testosterone claiming to have been a Navy Seal, or an Israeli commando, or some other such thing. Blumenthal is a well know politician who looked as if he was going to be a rare bird in 2010, a Democrat who was going to be elected to high office.
Perhaps that is no longer the case. Being caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy, to quote former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards, is one thing. To have been caught stealing honor is something that goes beyond even the jaded sensibilities of a public that has seen politicians rob, dissemble, cheat, and lie with abandon. Connecticut may be a blue state, but it does have its share of real combat veterans, guys who have spent time crawling through muck and blood for their country. They are not disposed to be amused by someone who claims to be one of them but, in fact, is not.
As of this writing, Richard Blumenthal is unrepentant. Of course, he admits, he did not actually serve in Vietnam; sorry about the misimpression. But he did serve while Vietnam was raging, albeit stateside. Besides, Blumenthal claims, he has always stood up for the veteran-so there!
To compound Blumenthal’s problems, Allahpundit reports that his likely Republican opponent, Rob Simmons, is a decorated Vietnam vet and rose, eventually, to the rank of Colonel after a 37-year career.
The question arises, will Richard Blumenthal have the good grace to step aside, to make way for yet another Democrat with a chance of actually being elected? Or will Blumenthal actually try to gut it out, bull ahead and hope that his 20-point lead will prove enough of a cushion to take him to victory? So far he seems disposed to the latter course.
Washington Democrats, looking at the loss of both houses of Congress dead in the face, must be very unhappy indeed.
