The Ady Gil Races to the Steve Irwin on Season 3, Episode 3 of Whale Wars
The 60 year old ship Bob Barker, led by Captain Swift, is in trouble. Its engine has failed and 10 foot swells are threatening the boat with capsizing, but finally the engine is fixed. But still over 2,000 miles away from the Steve Irwin, the boat has to face a terrible storm. Instead of navigating around it, the skipper heads into it to get to Captain Watson’s boat sooner. The boat and its crew and possessions are slung all over, and has caught a leak. But it survives the storm and gets the leaked repaired as the first iceberg is spotted on Whale Wars, Season 3, Episode 3.
The 78 foot Ady Gil, which is skippered by Captain Bethune, has two new members from New Zealand. The skipper trains the crew on shooting “doctored” arrows into caught whales that’ll destroy the edible value of the meat. As they travel en route to the Steve Irwin, they find buoys containing a long line full of fishing hooks, but take the buoys and make the transponder moot.
The Steve Irwin Ditches the Shonan Maru No. 2 on Whale Wars, Season 3, Episode 3
On the Steve Irwin, it’s occupied with the Shonan Maru No. 2 stalking it for the last two weeks. Captain Watson orders a stink bomb launch as this Japanese boat gets closer with its hose spraying, and even the skipper throws one in disgust. The stern line is put out into the ocean to try to disable the Shonan Maru No. 2’s propeller, which doesn’t ultimately work on Season 3, Episode 3, of Whale Wars. The smaller ship Delta is now to be used to distract the Japanese ship while the Steve Irwin escapes, but with the Japanese boat closing in, it’s too risky to launch the boat, frustrating the Sea Shepherds. Captain Watson decides to wait for a hook up with the Ady Gil, and turn north towards the faster ally, away from any more confrontations for the time being.
The Ady Gil and Steve Irwin finally meet. Captain Bethune meets the Steve Irwin crew and Captain Watson himself for only the second time. They discuss strategy for taking on the Japanese whalers, which includes the smaller, faster boat sneaking up on the Shonan Maru No. 2. As Episode 3 ends, the confrontation between the Ady Gil and Shonan Maru No. 2 begins.
