The “Sex and the City” movie was highly anticipated when it was released in 2008. Fans of the girls needed their fix of fashion, gossip, the Big Apple, and of course: sex. The personal lives of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda have always been well-documented throughout the show and fans feel like they know these characters well. In the “Sex and the City” movie, Carrie’s relationship with Big took most of the focus as they navigated the rocky waters to marital bliss.
In the beginning of the story, Big and Carrie get a condo together and one night he unromantically proposes to her. It is in typical Big fashion, but it works for his character and also for Carrie as she says yes to the question. Problems only start to pop up when Carrie gets overwhelmed with a photoshoot and with her friend’s input into her wedding arrangements.
Originally, Carrie and Big were just going to have their nuptuals at city hall before a judge. She was going to wear a simple little dress that she finds while poking around in her closet. During the photoshoot, she gets to try on many different beautiful designer wedding dresses. Some of her friends watch from the sidelines as she sparkles in front of the cameras. Carrie receives one of these dresses as a gift and decides that she is going to wear it for her wedding.
Carrie then makes arrangements for a big wedding in a New York City library. She looks stunning on the day of her wedding, but she is rejected when Big shows up extremely late and says that he can’t go through with it. She runs out of the building crying to find Big in a limo on the street. He gets out and she destroys a bouquet of flowers by striking him over the head with it.
Carrie spends several months being depressed about the incident and about her failed relationship. This draws out the story and almost makes the movie not worth watching more than once. It seems like maybe the writers just had to think of some type of drama to come into play. On the other hand, though, Big has always been one of the best male characters on the show, and his relationship with Carrie has always been on-again, off-again.
By the end of the movie, the two end up getting married at city hall with Carrie adorned in the first dressed she picked out, as they had planned in the beginning. The movie gives fans gratification because we have all wanted to really see Carrie and Big work it out as a couple. They have always had their problems, but they have always gotten back together periodically. From the first season of the show, to the last, Big was always the one for Carrie. It just took a movie to prove it.
