Running head: STYLE OF WRITING The Science Behind the American Psychological Association’s Style of Writing
The abstract should be a clear and concise summary of the contents in the paper. Start the abstract with the main piece of information. It is essentially the most critical piece of the entire paper. Make each sentence as useful as possible. The abstract should contain a great deal of information, but also be short and quick to the point. Spell out everything and define terms that are not easily understood. It should be accurate, well cited and defined, reasonably informative, and easily understandable to others. The abstract should also contain less than 120 words.
The Science Behind the American Psychological Association’s Style of Writing
The first piece of the introduction needs to include information about the issue at hand and the research strategy used in solving that problem. Begin the introduction with the assumption that whoever is reading the paper has some knowledge of the subject. Assuming this will prevent the writer from giving too much information on the historical background of the subject. Keep the citations and references to a minimum in the introduction. Only cite or reference when needed. Avoid using a great deal of general information. Include the importance of the problem and how the hypothesis relates to the problem. State the underlying principle for the hypothesis in the closing of the introduction.Method
The importance of the methods section is to show how the study was conducted. This section lets the reader evaluate the results and determine the accuracy of them. The methods section also lets the reader determine if the methods were suitable for the type of study conducted. Include subsections and label them properly. The subsections are important because they give a description of the participants or subjects in the study, the materials used, and how the procedure was conducted. When humans are used in the study, include why they were chosen and the characteristics between the participants. There are two different subsections for equipment and materials used. Details of the equipment used go in the Apparatus subsection, and the written materials go in the Materials subsection. The procedure subsection must specify each step in the study.Result
The results section summarizes he data used and collected in the study. The data should consist of enough detail to support the conclusions. The proper use of tables, figures, and statistics is important. Use tables and figures to explain complex results. If the information obtained in easily readable, there is no need for a table or figure for that information. When using statistics, make sure the results are in the properly written format and that it fits with the results of the hypothesis.Discussion
The discussion section is where the results are evaluated. The opening statement should show support or nonsupport of your hypothesis. It is best not to restate points that have already been mentioned previously in the paper. Each point should help the reader understand the results. Be sure to explain alternative to your results. Answer questions about the importance of the problem and what this information can tell someone about a real world phenomenon. These questions should be answered at the end of the discussion section along with a conclusion of your findings.
