There has been many rude acts perpetrated upon me and I am usually able to brush it aside and choose the higher road. In 2008 i went through a situation that was by far the rudest thing I ever went through. Many phrases can describe this but “rude behavior” is definitely near the top of the list. So sit back and relax and you will hear a story about the rudest thing that has ever been done to me.
My wife and I, both having ties to New York City and the surrounding suburbs, decided to give the country a try for various reasons. We lived in the lower Hudson Valley about an hour north of the city for a while and decided that the country was really not our thing and came to the conclusion that we should move back down to the city. By that time going back to Manhattan was not an option because we were still in a real estate boom and the prices in the Big Apple were just too much for anything decent. We also looked in parts of Brooklyn and Jersey City but eventually landed in Hoboken, N.J. It is a great little city located on the banks of the Hudson River just across from the hip Chelsea area of Manhattan. It was a perfect choice being as I work in N.Y.C. and the bus takes you about 10 minutes to get to midtown west and the Path train is a similar ride. We wanted to rent for a year and we found a great 2 bedroom apartment with use of a pool and full gym. We thought we were happy again being back down in civilization but things were about to change as the rudest thing that has ever been done to me was about to happen.
The first three months in the apartment were great. Back in the city enjoying all of the great things that Hoboken and N.Y.C. have to offer. At that time we were contacted by the landlord, who was a private owner of the condo that we were renting, who said there was water leaking into the basement condo that was right below us. She stated that a water inspector was going to be there to check things out and determine what was the cause of the problem. He came by and looked around for a while and said he was done and he would send his report to myself and the landlord. I asked him who he was and he said he was a water inspector for the city of Hoboken, so i asked him for his credentials. He told me he forgot it and assured me that he did work for the city. You can imagine the suspicion growing in my head.
At this time I found out that the apartment below us was virtually destroyed due to the water damage. The woman who owned it hadn’t been there in two years and just paid the property a visit for the first time in a while and saw the destruction. A few days later the report came back. It stated that all damage was caused by the improper shower curtain usage of the tenants above, meaning my wife and I. At this point I got a copy of the pictures from downstairs. The damage was severe. Being in the construction industry my whole adult life I knew this was long term damage and wasn’t a result of 3 months of showering. Which by the way, we know how to shower!!! I then went to City Hall and asked to speak to the water inspector. There are two of them and I met them both. Not one of them was the man I saw that day. It turns out he was a private water inspector who helps people with leaks in there home on how to solve the problem. In no way did he work for the city of Hoboken. The landlord called me and told me she would need my insurance information as this was my fault and i needed to pay for the damage in the apartment below. It was now confirmed as to what was going on. She knew of the problem when we moved in and tried to lie and be deceitful and get us to foot the bill. Already this was turning out to be the rudest thing that has ever been done to me.
I was called constantly by the landlord who kept telling me it was my fault. I was being harassed by phone calls and e mail, talk about rude behavior. Finally the condo association of the building hired a plumber to look into it. It turns out it was a leak in the drainage system from the tub. She still swore that the pipe had nothing to do with it and it was our fault! The plumber agreed to give us a copy of the paperwork because he knew we were getting screwed. The rudeness of this landlord to try and blame us for a problem that was in no way our fault. She was outright rude and dishonest by trying to trick us into believing that this water inspector was the final say so on whose liability this was.
This went on for the whole rest of the year that we rented there. For nine months I am thinking that this is the rudest thing that I ever went through. Because she was so insistent that it was our fault, we were actually named in a lawsuit for tens of thousands of dollars by the woman downstairs. She knew it was not our fault but was trying to get us to pay. Our landlord was actually telling her that it was our fault and that she should go after us in court for the damages.
After all was said and done we were vindicated. We knew that we were not the cause of anything but you start thinking. Sometimes if the other party is rude and dishonest enough someone might start believing her. We were off the hook, a hook which we should have never been on in the first place. We ended up moving into a condo of our own and it is so much better to be an owner than a renter. We can now enjoy what these two great city’s have to offer without any nonsense. I hope you will agree, that this is the rudest thing that has ever been done to me
