For the last ten years golf has very much been dominated by the same stars. That domination has mainly been by Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, but up until very recently not many young stars had broken into the spotlight. The following is the top five young golfers who are well on their way to becoming superstars.
1. Rickie Fowler
Rickie Fowler being the best young golfer in the world right now should not be a surprise to anyone. His success did not just appear overnight. Fowler had been the number one ranked amateur golfer for a stretch that lasted from 2007 through 2008. Since turning pro in 2008, Fowler has had an impressive career and landed himself some very lucrative sponsorships. Titleist and Puma both signed Fowler in 2008. He has played in 28 career events, coming in the top twenty five a total of nine times, and made seven top ten finishes including two second place awards. In that span Fowler made approximately $2,700,000. So far through the 2010 season he is leading the Kodak Challenge.
2. Rory McIlroy
McIlroy, the young Northern Ireland golfer, exploded onto the scene in 2009 and has been following it up in 2010. In 2009 McIlroy played in eleven events and finished impressively in the top twenty five seven times. In 2010 he had a lead after the first day of the British Open, but then crumbled in his second round to knock himself out of the lead. In 2010 he has played in twenty three events placing in the top twenty five eleven times. His total career winnings stand at just about $2,800,000.
3. Dustin Johnson
Dustin Johnson is a young American golfer who played college golf at Coastal Carolina University. He went pro after a successful amateur career in 2007 but only played in one event. In 2008 he played in a whopping thirty events but only managed to make the cut in about half of those. In 2009 he played in twenty five events and improved making almost every cut and taking eleven top twenty five finishes. In 2010 he has had a very nice year so far playing in seventeen events and already cashing $2,400,000 this season. His total career winnings stand at just over $7,000,000.
4. Matteo Manassero
Manassero is a special talent who made history at the 2010 Masters championship. He became the youngest player to ever win the masters at age 16 years old. Manassero also set the record for the youngest player to ever win the British Amateur Championship at age 16 as well. Shortly there in after his performance at the Masters, Manassero went pro in May of 2010. This young Italian may be the next sports Superstar but it is still too early to tell for sure as he has not played enough as a pro yet.
5. Anthony Kim
The American Kim, went pro late in 2006. Since then he has played in eighty events and had thirty six top twenty five finishes. Kim also has three wins to add to his resume. Anthony has career winnings of over $11,000,000. Between him and Fowler, American golf is surely in good hands going forward for years to come.
