Back in February, I published this article about romantic restaurants for a Valentines date in Milwaukee. Sadly, the romantic Milwaukee favorite Pizza Man has since burned down. Here, however, I have a list of four more choices – some of the best romantic restaurants in the city of Milwaukee.
1. Umami Moto:718 Milwaukee St.
This Asian Fusion restaurant has repeatedly been voted among Milwaukee’s best. The atmosphere is clean, modern, elegant. The seats are white leather, and the walls are decorated with green glass tiles and columns of smooth black stones. The food is incredible. Umami Moto is famous for their lobster chowder, but also try the sushi and the Kobe beef sliders, and leave room for the excellent dessert selection. It is rather quiet and peaceful on weeknights, but busy, buzzing with activity on weekends. It is a great place to bring a date to begin a high energy night on the town.
2. centro cafe: 808 E. Center St.
centro café (lowercase) is a charming new Italian restaurant in Riverwest, with surprisingly affordable prices. It is a tiny place – 32 seats – built in a renovated 1926 storefront. There is an open grill on the dining floor where your chef prepares your meal behind a marble countertop as you watch. Along the opposite wall, old church pews serve as benches. The ambiance is quietly romantic, with soft pendant lighting, and simple old world charm. It is casual, affordable, and delicious, and the perfect way to begin a relaxing romantic evening. centro café does not accept reservations, and can get quite busy on weekends, so plan ahead if you’re on a timetable.
3. Tess: 2499 N. Bartlett
Tess is a hidden gem of romantic Milwaukee restaurants. It is on the first floor of what looks like a residential building on the corner of Bartlett and Bradford, and easy to miss if you don’t know what you’re looking for. This is also a tiny place, with only about 15 tables in the dining room, though with beautiful courtyard-style patio seating during warm weather. The inside is cozy, with warm colors and soft candlelight; it feels intimate and inviting. The prices are a little higher – entrees run $10-19. But it is worth the wait. The menu changes, but always offers interesting world fusion type selections, with the menu divided into courses. They currently have a 3 for $25 prix fix special going on. Tess also is known for its many gluten-free options. This place is worthy of a romantic dinner for any special occasion.
4. Chez Jacques: 1022 S. 1st St.
Chez Jacques is the most authentically French restaurant in Milwaukee. It has a quaint and simple Parisian style that makes for a uniquely romantic dining experience. It has three dining rooms, the first sunny and bright, with a bar, and the other two quieter, darker, cozier. Soft French music plays in the background. The food is incredible. Popular for brunches, Chez Jacques does crepes very well. For dinner, they have a great selection of French wine, and traditional French recipes that will not disappoint. Take your date here when you two feel the need to escape. Spend a leisurely, romantic Saturday evening or Sunday afternoon here, and you’ll feel as if you’ve spent hours in a quiet Paris neighborhood.
