The Legend of the Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger

by itchy fish

As you know trends come and go. When it comes to trends in food, they usually peter out never to return. Good food is always going to be good food. But a food trend is usually a fad of the moment that reflects certain moments in time. Let me introduce you to a food trend that seems to want to keep coming back. The Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger. Yeah… you heard me right. A cheeseburger sandwich with a glazed Krispy Kreme donut bun. Just saying it hurts my arteries. As recently reported by thestar.com, this fat man’s delicacy has recently popped up at the 2010 Wisconsin State Fair. Dished out by the Machine Shed Restaurant, the 1000 calorie cheeseburger can even be topped with chocolate covered bacon if you’re feeling adventurous. Oh yeah! Now we’re talking. If you’re going to risk a diabetic coma, you might as well get your money’s worth. This caloric curiosity has been getting quite a few hits recently on Yahoo!, Google, and Bing as the unique combination gains an underground following.

Although this waistline Destroyer may be new to some, this isn’t the first time the creation has created such a buzz. The Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger made an impression back in the summer of 2006 when, as reported by CBSnews.com, the Gateway Grizzlies offered the unique sandwich at their concession stands. That’s right. The infamous Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger flexed its fatty muscles at a minor league baseball game just outside of St. Louis, MO. Their version of the burger was actually a Krispy Kreme Bacon Cheeseburger. Talk about a great night out. Baseball, donuts, cheeseburgers, and bacon? All at the same time? Oh this great land of ours. I think I’m about to break out in song. “America, America…”

You know, it always amazes me when people come up with such innovative ideas. I guess inspiration can come from anywhere. Perhaps the minor league baseball team was inspired by television. Huh? Did ABC’s Jetsons zap up the “Artery Burger” in their automatic food dispenser? Did NBC’s Star Trek cast beam down the “Comatose Americana” in their food replicator? Nope! It was Sony Pictures Television’s The Boondocks aired on Adult Swim (Cartoon Network). Back in January of 2006, The Boondocks introduced their version of the Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger complete with grilled onions and lots of bacon. As detailed by John Kennedy on vibe.com, the grandfather character opened a new soul food restaurant called, The Itis where “cholesterol-pumping dishes put patrons to sleep before making it to the parking lot.” But instead of it being called the Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger, their version was dubbed The Luther Burger: “A full pound burger patty covered in cheese. Grilled onions, five strips of bacon, all sandwiched between… two Krispy Kreme donuts.”

I’m getting hungry and disgusted just thinking about it right now. Eww…Yum! After eating one of those I’d DEFINITELY have to go on thatCookie Diet.

Bon Apetit!!!
