Joining a list of other big-name movies such as Clash of the Titans, Paramount’s release of The Last Airbender has been announced it’s going 3-D as well. The original film was shot in traditional format but Stereo D will go in and post-produce the movie in 3-D according to Variety. The company has been working with Paramount behind the scenes for about a year now.
With this news also comes the third and last teaser trailer for the movie, still to be released on July 2. While this new trailer doesn’t have too many more spectacular scenes than the previous ones, it will still please fans of the original show.
This trailer we get to see more of the flying sky bison Appa (pronounced AH-pah). This is a ten ton, six legged creature who is the titular Aang’s best friend and familiar. Appa is the key to taking Aang from one pole of the earth to the other in order for Aang to help master the elements.
Also included in the footage are some kick-butt airbending, waterbending, and firebending. We see Aang do a spectacular air and water vortex at the Northern Water Tribe near the film’s climactic battle against the Fire Nation Navy as they assault a huge tribe of waterbenders and warriors who are defending their homes.
Princess Yue gets more screen time in this trailer as the daughter of Chief Arnook who will end up sacrificing herself to save the world. Fans of the original series also have much to be proud of when you see her splashing into the spirit oasis with two koi fish circling each other.
The Last Airbender is the first film in a planned trilogy based upon Nickelodeon’s hit animated series called Avatar: The Last Airbender that aired on the kid’s network. As a fan of the series I have been very impressed with the visual representation and the characterizations so far that director M. Night Shyamalan has preserved from the original look of the animated series.
Despite the controversial “race bending” that has led many to feel Shyamalan has cast Caucasian actors in lead roles, I feel like he’s done an excellent job by the previews we’ve seen. Zuko glaring at Uncle Iroh and saying “I will not live in peace until I find him” sums up what the first movie will be about.
Zuko, banished prince of the Fire Nation, will try to redeem his honor by capturing the only one who can stop his people from conquering the world. Aang, the titular last of his kind, is the only one who can manipulate all four elements and bring balance to the world.
The chase begins July 2nd. My family and I can’t wait.
