Landon Donovan has certainly had quite an impressive run of luck the last few weeks. Though the United States fell in the round of 16 to Ghana in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, rumors are flying that the United States forward will join an English Premier League soon. Many of the rumors are focusing the deep-pocketed Manchester City acquiring the services of Donovan. However, the fleet foot Team USA and Los Angeles Galaxy mid-fielder recently completed a successful loan spell with Everton. It would seem the Landon Donovan rumor mill is set to hit overdrive very shortly.
With cross town rivals Manchester United somewhat off their game with regards to losing Christiano Ronaldo and having some debt issues, the free spending Man City could gain some ground on their rivals and no doubt use Donovan in their attack. Of course, with Carlos Tevez and Emmanuel Abedayor already up front, City would add more quality to an already crowded side. Man City would greatly improve upon their chances of being a top four team this coming season. While City showed some resolve during the last EPL campaign, a few more players and a Champions League appearance is very real possibility.
The Los Angeles Galaxy would come out as the true losers in any transfer involving Donovan. Considering David Beckham’s contract nearing a conclusion, and his apparent desire to continue to play in Italy, and no Landon Donovan, the Galaxy would be scratching around for players to fill their voids. Sure, some money would inevitably fall their way from a Donovan transfer, but really what players are available to fill his role in Major League Soccer? The Galaxy would likely seek out a talented player near the end of his career in Europe to inject a shot of brilliance into the lineup. Exactly who that player will be remains to be seen.
The Galaxy and MLS would be foolish to stand in the way of a transfer. Donovan had a fairly successful showing the World Cup, and even scored a clutch penalty against Ghana and of course that dramatic game winner against Algeria. In truth, his stock may never get any higher. With the miles starting to add up on Landon, and Team USA likely to look elsewhere come the 2014 World Cup, it is time for this key American player to test the overseas battles on a regular basis. Should City come calling with a bucket full of cash, all sides involved should take a hard look, then grab the bucket and run.
