Raising teenagers can be one of the most frustrating times in your parenting history. Teens will try the patience of their parents until there is no patience left. You can’t laugh off all the trials of being the parent of a teenager, but there are times that you can find the humor in the situation. It is important to remember that your teenagers are really just young adults because they are learning, now more than ever, how to be independent. There is a lot more humor in these years than parents are willing to admit.
The teen years are full of angst, tears and rebellion. Your teenager will likely put you to the test in every way possible. If they don’t, they are probably not normal teens. Showing your teen that some things in life, no matter how desperate they seem at first, can be turned around by simply using the sense of humor God gave them. That doesn’t mean to make a joke about your child’s life every time something happens. It does mean that you should try to help them find a sense of humor about some of those situations.
Having a good sense of humor when you are the parent of a teenager will make it easier for you to stay sane as well. Your teen may well drive you insane before it’s all over with, so learn to laugh off some of those situations. For instance, if your child got caught up in some antic that was bad, you have to discipline them. After it is all over, find the humor in what your child did. It’s just like when they are little children except the offenses tend to be a little more extensive.
The teenage years is when parents begin to feel their age. Teenagers do what teenagers do and parents can even have health problems associated with it. Parents resistance begins to wear down. They are susceptible to getting ulcers and other stomach problems due to the worries that they go through while their teenager is going through the hardest learning stage of their lives. Learning to put on a good sense of humor and laughing at some of the issues can be the difference between going to the doctor on a constant basis and staying healthy.
Teenagers were created to drive their parents crazy. Don’t let them do it. Once you have disciplined them for their actions, take a good look at the situation. You are certain to find situations that allow you to laugh at it instead of cry. You will be glad that you have made the effort to laugh with your child and it will even create memories for the two of you to look back on in the future.
