The Hayward Ranch in Hayward, California: Restaurant Review – The Ranch Restaurant in the city of Hayward is an old classic. The Ranch has been in business since 1948 and is locally owned. The Ranch is downtown near city hall, and many city meetings in the past were moved to the Ranch. It still hosts Hayward’s movers and shakers. This building is rustic in style and inside is decorated in old western and ranch. The walls are adorned with a collection of old ranch implements and movie posters and ads from long ago. The inside is painted a redwood color, so the walls are fairly dark, but there is plenty of light in the restaurant.
The first thing you notice is the bar, which is separate from the dinning area. There are usually people at the bar in this restaurant. The bar is well set up with two televisions. If you want to eat a meal, you have to leave the bar area and go into the dining area. The restaurant is set up with two separate areas, one which looks like it is set up for dining, and the other for banquet dining or large groups. The Ranch has both booths and tables.
The menu is not that large, but has a good selection. The prices are reasonable for what you get, especially for lunch and breakfast. The dinner prices are a little more expensive, but they give you a lot of food. The Ranch has a barbecue cooking fire, and features barbecue and grilled menu items. It also features other types of fare, including breakfast and lunch sandwiches. The menu also includes Italian and Mexican dishes, as well as standard steak house dishes. You can also order a salad and soup if you wish.
I had their omelet for breakfast and it was perfect. The food was quite tasty. The omelet came with fruit and toast options. I opted against the potatoes. For lunch, I tried their steak sandwich and it was also great. For dinner, we had both the steak and the chicken breast and both were wonderful. We tried their lemon chicken soup and it was exceptional. There is no problem with the food at this restaurant.
The service was friendly and fast. Dinner featured a full service for this meal and was very well done. The waitress checked on us several times, and gave us extra bread and drinks. At dinner, the waitress picks up the bill, during the other meals, you pay at the front desk. This works out well.
The Ranch also does take out, and anything from the menu can be ordered as take out. I have not tried the take out, but they seem to have a busy time with this during the day.
To sum up, the Ranch is a good deal with good food and prices during the day, and exceptional service at the dinner hour which is a little more expensive. The atmosphere is family like, and can get noisy at times. The one problem is parking with this restaurant. It is limited, but we have always been able to find a place. I believe some of the regulars actually walk to the restaurant. Give the Ranch a try. You will not be sorry.
The Ranch is located at the junction of Foothill Boulevard and Mission Boulevard. It is most easily approached from the southern direction.
