The Green Hornet Trailer Premieres After Power Outage

The Green Hornet trailer was set for a big premiere. The debut of The Green Hornet trailer would be on Jimmy Kimmel Live, with the Green Hornet himself introducing it. Seth Rogen would come on as the headline guest of the evening, and unveil the teaser of his superhero action movie. Rogen did just that – but, as it turned out, no one saw it because the power had gone out in Kimmel’s studio. As such, the first real look at The Green Hornet trailer was online, although it will be shown on TV tonight.

The movie itself has gone through a lot to even get this far. It has faced production delays, the recasting of a key role, and doubts over whether it could work. What’s more, its final release date is in January 2011, and movies released in January are usually not too good.

For all these concerns, The Green Hornet trailer last night was the first official look at the film itself. It showed Rogen in his typical party animal mode, before the death of his newspaper mogul father causes him to straighten up. With help from Asian valet Kato, Rogen becomes the Green Hornet, who sets out to infiltrate the bad guys by being bad himself.

Casting Rogen as a superhero already makes the project eyebrow-raising, to say nothing of having indie darling Michel Gondry as the director. For good measure, it also has Oscar winner Christoph Waltz as the villain, along with Cameron Diaz, Tom Wilkinson, and Jay Chou replacing Stephen Chow as Kato. Needless to say, few know quite what to expect from this film.

The Green Hornet trailer inspired split reactions, with CHUD’s Devin Faraci saying it looks like a generic action film, and doubting Rogen and Chou’s chemistry. But, Aint It Cool News’ Mr. Beaks says it goes a long way to quell anxiety, although he was interviewing Rogen and Gondry at the time. But, they tease that there’s a lot in the movie – including a technique called “Kato vision” – that isn’t shown off in the clip.

Fans were able to see the teaser online, since they couldn’t see The Green Hornet trailer on television as planned. Rogen introduced the clip on Jimmy Kimmel Live, yet a power outage prevented the show from going on the air. However, Kimmel taped the entire episode on his laptop, and it will air in its entirety at 12:05 am.

It is fitting that The Green Hornet trailer is coming on TV a day late, given its obstacles in filming. Yet, it arrives after everyone else has seen it online, and ruled on whether it overcame the odds after all. But, the final verdict will come when the film finally premieres on January 14, 2011.
