‘The Good Guys’ Season 1 Episode 2 ‘Bait and Switch’ begins with Jack about to be gunned down by a very bad-tempered dealer in stolen cars named Nigel. How this came to pass is the story of this particular episode.
We start 38 or so hours earlier. Spoilers follow.
Jack and Dan are investigating a window in a suburban house as a result of a thrown rock. Dan takes the opportunity for a little prurient play disguised as police work by getting into bed with one of the lovely home owners. Dan gets his cheap thrill, but also notices that a street light just outside the bedroom window has also been broken. This is done to conceal crimes being committed out in the street. Presumably, the window was broken because the perpetrator missed his real target.
Jack and Dan notice a pattern of stolen American classic cars throughout the neighborhood. But, the head of a crime task force, an attractive woman named Kiersten (whom Dan insists on calling Kristian) will not parcel out resources to follow up.
Jack and Dan improvise. They need a bait car. Dan has a vintage TransAm. They need a tracking device. They find one that is unfortunately attached to the leg of a parole informant. They persuade the poor fellow to hide out in the trunk of the TransAm while it gets stolen.
Dan messes things up by downloading porn (along with a virus) to the laptop that is being used to monitor the tracking device. Nevertheless they find the warehouse with the stolen cars and pick up the unfortunate parolee, who, though worse for wear, has made his escape.
Meanwhile, Nigel, the British dealer in stolen cars, is put out. His girlfriend does not pick up the phone. A man they bribed to smuggle the stolen cars on a train out of Texas is demanding more money and needs to get shot. A pair of red necks with a car carrier is making unreasonable demands for their services. On top of all that, when Nigel finally hooks up with his girlfriend on the phone, they have a spat.
The raid on the warehouse goes wrong, as the cars are no longer there. It is as if Nigel knew they were coming. As well he might, as Nigel’s girl friend is none other than Kiersten; she has been feeding him intelligence from within the department. Kiersten takes a sudden interest in Jack. Not for his boyish good looks, but for his ability to find a warehouse full of stolen cars without department resources.
Kiersten lures Jack into his own apartment, subdues him, and takes him to Nigel and the new warehouse. And that is how we got to the beginning of the episode.
Meanwhile Dan has figured out that Kiersten is a traitor. It also turns out that Jack is wearing the tracking device once worn by the parole informant. Still, Dan’s inability to work a computer for anything besides downloading porn almost causes disaster.
Meanwhile the two rednecks, their patriotism offended by a Brit stealing American cars and trying to smuggle them out of the country, decide to take matters into their own hands. This is fortunate, as the two interrupt Nigel in the process of not only shooting Jack, but also Kiersten whom Jack has convinced him is sleeping with everyone.
Still, things look dark until Dan finally arrives to save the day. Nigel is shot, Kiersten is taken into custody, the red necks run for it, and Jack and Dan go forth to celebrate by drinking beer and eating oysters until they vomit.
What a weird, wonderful show this is.
