The Death of Nurse Devane

by itchyfish

Nurse Devane’s heels clip-clopped against the wet pavement, she thought about going back to the hospital and getting her boots; there were patches of mud everywhere in the parking lot. Nurse Devane looked back at the hospital, the spotlight in front of the building, which whose purpose was too only illuminate the sign in the front, and tonight it was casting a heavy shadow over the entire hospital, hoping to project an ethereal image to the county asylum. After a moment of thought, Nurse Devane decided it best to go home, her boots would still be there in the morning. Nurse Devane slipped into her silver VW bug, she was ready to slip the key into the ignition, she glanced up into the rearview mirror to check and see if there were any other cars coming, instead she found two cold, black eyes were staring back at her, she turned around to get a better glimpse of her prowler. Suddenly he reached up from the back seat and forced her to face the windshield. Before she could utter a cry for help, he wrapped his belt around her neck and jerked her toward himself, she got her fingernails under the leather belt and tried freeing herself from his grip, but it was too late, the belt was too tight around her neck, she struggled and struggled, but it was too late, her life force was extinct.

“No!” Ora shot up in bed and cried, her eyes were wide with anger. Her breaths were short, and she was so panic stricken that she was almost panting; her energy escaped through her night terror, Ora fell back onto her pillow, she was too weak to stay awake, but soon after her eyes closed and she fell back to sleep.

~~~
A Terrible banging awakened Ora, her brown eyes shot wide open, everything in front of her was hazy. Ora tried to focus in on the gray blob in front of her eyes. “Who’s there?” Suddenly she felt herself being thrown out of her bed. “Time to wake up, you little nutjob!” A husky voice boomed. Ora poked her head out from underneath the comforter. “Look at what we have here. This little girl looks frightened to me!” The nurse mockfully concluded. Ora did not recognize this woman, she was no Nurse Devane; she was plump and fierce looking with dyed red hair, and her orange roots were tale telling. Ora still remained on the floor. “What are you waiting for, nutjob, get off the floor?” The gruff nurse nudged at Ora’s ribs with her foot, she flinched at the pain. “Where is Nurse Devane?” Ora asked with tears swelling up her eyes. “What do you want her for, is it because of this soft, warm comforter she gave you, or because she was so sweet?” Ora’s lips formed into a soft smile.
“Well you can forget about her, nutjob, she isn’t coming back for you!” Nurse Nafar proceeded in ripping the comforter right out from underneath her feet, the force narrowly knocked Ora to the floor. “You can’t have this either!” She hollered. “Why are you yelling at me?” Ora wiped the tears from her eyes. “Stop your whimpering, Nurse Nefar takes guff from no one, especially from little girls who hear voices!” Nurse Nefar snatched Ora by the wrist and pulled her from the room. “You want Nurse Devane, then I’ll send you to her!” Nurse Nefar dragged her down the hallway and pushed her against the window, from this spot, Ora could see the parking lot, sitting in front of an abandoned silver bug was an ambulance, they were carrying a covered stretcher from the silver bug to the truck.
While Ora steadily watched, an arm slipped out from underneath the sheet, Ora’s head was full of fright when she recognized a white gold ring with strawberries on it, her night terrors were more than dreams, now they were real. The realization caused Ora’s eyes to swell with tears. “Nurse Devane!” Ora began banging on the window.
“Stop that, its time you learned the ways of real life!” Nurse Nefar pulled her back to her room and forced her Ora down onto the bed, while still crying hysterically for Nurse Devane, Nurse Nefar plunged the needle into Ora’s arm, slowly her eyes began to cloud over and eventually faded into unconsciousness. “That should keep you quiet for a while.” Nurse Nefar peered at the young girl before leaving, she turned off the lights and bolted the door closed from the inside, she didn’t need her wandering around the hospital, and seeing things she shouldn’t be seeing.
