Something that few people realize is that weight loss surgery is a major surgery. Weight loss surgery should be your last resort, if you do not have the will power or self discipline to lose weight with any one of the myriad weight loss plans, or have a medical condition that prevents you from using a weight loss plan successfully then you may indeed be a candidate for weight loss surgery.
The most common reasons of why people would like to lose weight is to enhance their physical attributes and become attractive to the opposite sex. If this is your main reason to seek weight loss you should not be considering surgery.
Weight loss surgery
All of the current weight loss surgeries involve the shrinking of the stomach. Some use staples or bands to shrink the size of the stomach, while other surgeries remove part of the stomach. All of them carry a big risk of complications, and are not a guarantee of successful weight loss.
Weight loss surgery forces a lifestyle change into your life. After the surgery you have no choice but to eat a sensible balanced diet. You will be forced to give up those high calorie high fat foods. What you have done is essentially given yourself a medical condition that must be treated for the rest of your life.
You must above all else know that it is a serious lifestyle change, and while the majority of the surgeries can be reversed some can’t. You will be facing a life long commitment to the result of the surgery.
Compared to a regular weight loss program
A regular weight loss program involves changing the way and what you eat. The concept here is that you do it for yourself, not because you have to after surgery. You are the one who has to eat sensible balance meals, and add some activity in your life. Either through personal self discipline or with support from friends and coaches you will maintain this behavior until you finally accept the change for your new lifestyle.
To have permanent successful weight loss is to have a personal lifestyle change: More activity, more controlled caloric intake. It may take a bit longer than surgery, but has none of the risks that weight loss surgery has. If followed long enough it has the same effect as the surgery as it becomes a permanent part of your life and who you are.
Lastly, a simple weight loss plan is far less expensive and painful than weight loss surgery. The only costs are mitigated by the fact that you already buy food, now you simply buy better stuff. In addition, as you find yourself eating less, your grocery bill goes down.
Consider surgery only if you have no other choice, and if it is to improve your health and save your life, rather than to just look good.
