Hot summer days in the park call for an amazing summer cocktail. To save your picnic outings from certain melting, we offer you an exclusive summer drink: the Brooklyn Curacao Cooler! The best cocktail ever.
I am really not even that into cocktails. I mean, sure, I love a good Mojito and some of the signature cocktails at various bars around town are simply amazing, but still, I will usually order a beer or ale of some sort. I just don’t like paying high prices for what are often disappointing drinks.
And so I rarely make them for myself, either. I am just not in the habit of doing so. But yesterday we went for a picnic down in Batter Park (read about the Five Best Picnic Spots in NYC here)
Searching through the piles of recipes we have in various forms, I decided upon one that I found in a deck of playing cards that feature a different drink for each number and suit: the two of clubs, other wise known as a Curacao Cooler. And since I am not sure how to pronounce “Curacao”, I looked it up: koo r-uh-sou. (You can hear an audio clip of it here)
But to spell it more phonetically, I would say “Coup” (as in an overthrow of a government) ruh – sow (sow as in the pig). Coup-ruh-sow.
So anyways. The Curacao Cooler sounded good with lots of citrus flavors including Orange juice and squeezed limes and lemons. Now I never follow recipes exactly. Its just not in my nature. But what I created ended up tasting so incredibly good that I have to share it with the rest of the world!
With the hopes that other people will start making it for me of course. That’s just how I roll.
Anyways, here is what makes a “Brooklyn Curacao Cooler”:
1 oz Vodka
1 oz Blue Curacao
2 tsp lemon juice
2 tsp lime juice
Orange juice to fill.
Now, what I did was to combine the first four ingredients five times (so 5 oz Vodka and Curacao, 10 tsp lemon and lime juices) into a 1 liter Nalgene Bottle. Then threw in 6-8 or so ice cubes, and topped it off with Orange juice.
If you do it in a 1 liter bottle like this you will end up using the exact same amount of orange juice and you’ll get exactly what I made. And that is the true Brooklyn Curacao Cooler: created as described above, in the 1 liter bottle with 5x the ingredients.
Oh and don’t forget to shake the bottle! It has to be well mixed before gloriously consuming.
And if you are really fancy you can throw in a lemon twist or three along with the ice. We might have to call that version the “Upper East Side Curacao Cooler” though, but no matter. Same wonderfully refreshing, citrusy drink that will impress all your friends and make you the most popular picnic go-er in your borough.
Just don’t hog it all for yourself: share the love!
