When Eragon released on December 13, 2006, starring Edward Speleers, Jeremy Irons, Garrett Hedlund, Sienna Guillory, Robert Carlyle, John Malkovich, Djimon Hounsou, Alun Armstrong, Joss Stone, and the voice of Rachel Weisz as the dragon Saphira, the movie defied the critics by being a box office success, earning $249,488,115 worldwide. Eragon became the 13th highest grossing fantasy-live action film in the United States. Eragon was released on DVD and Blu-ray on March 20, 2007 at number 1 on the national DVD sales charts in the U.S.
Part of the appeal of the movie was its youthful and relatively unknown cast of young men playing the lead characters of Eragon, Murtagh, and Roran. Where are the boys of Eragon now?
Edward Speleers – Eragon
Edward Speleers, who played the lead role in Eragon, was born April 7, 1988 in Great Britain. He was unknown when he played title role in Eragon, having only acted in school plays and a short film by Charlie Bleakley called Metropolis prior to playing Eragon. Since then Speleers appeared in the British prime time series “Echo Beach” as Jimmy Penwarden in 2008. More recently, Speleers was was cast in BAFTA nominated Director Julian Gilbey’s 2010 feature film A Lonely Place to Die, where he starred opposite Melissa George (30 Days of Night), Sean Harris (Harry Brown) and Eamonn Walker (Lord of War). He is also reported to be cast in the upcoming film The Good War (2011) as well as the movie Cowboys for Christ, the follow-up to the ’70s cult classic The Wicker Man. Other upcoming movies reportedly tied to Speleers include Scribble, A Dead Man in Deptford, Fizzy Days, and Skin. (teenidols4you.com/)
Garrett Hedlund – Murtagh
Garrett Hedlund, who played Eragon’s friend and enemy Murtagh was born September 3, 1984 in Minnesota. Before taking on Murtagh, Hedlund appeared in movies like Four Brothers, Friday Night Lights and Troy. Since Eragon, Hedlund has been busy with roles in movies including Georgia Rule with Lindsay Lohan and Jane Fonda; the upcoming film Tron: Legacy; and the country music drama Love Don’t Let Me Down with Tim McGraw and Gwyneth Paltrow where Hedlund sings as well as acts. Christopher Egan – Roran
Christopher “Chris” Egan, who played Eragon’s cousin Roran, was born in Sydney, Australia on June 29, 1984. He starred in commercials, some theater, and in the Australian soap opera “Home and Away” before his role in Eragon. Since then Egan has continued a career in television with a major role on Kings as well as having roles in movies like Resident Evil: Extinction (2007); Crush (2009); and Letters to Juliet (2010).
Christopher Paolini – Author
The author of the Eragon books, Christopher Paolini was born November 17, 1983 in Southern California) and was raised in Paradise Valley, Montana. Paolini graduated from high school at the age of 15 and started working on his first novel, Eragon. By the age of nineteen, Paolini was a New York Times bestselling author. Paolini’s ” Inheritance Cycle” includes four books Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and a fourth book which Paolini has been working on since Brisingr. The book is currently untitled but reportedly will feature an emerald green dragon on the cover. The release date has not yet been set for the 4th book.
With Edward Speleers, Garrett Hedlund, and Chris Egan now five years older than they were when they appeared in Eragon, it is unlikely the boys of Eragon would be assembled from the same cast for a movie sequel.
