I am an avid reader and I am always at the local bookstore looking for a good book to curl up with at the end of the day. I have lived in Sarasota, Florida for 10 years now and know of several locally owned bookstores that I have fallen in love with. Brant’s used books, A. Parkers Books, Living Word Christian Bookstore, Elysian Fields and Circle Books are all great stores if you are looking for a place that is cheap, has wide selection or if you are looking for a specific religious book.
With over 100,000+ used, out of print and rare titles, Brant’s Used Books is the oldest bookstore in Florida and has been open since 1956. It is also the largest used bookstore in Florida. Although they are currently closed and renovating their new location, the company still updates the website on a regular basis.Brant’s is located near the perfectly beautiful, white sandy beaches of Siesta key. The building is and old vintage Army barracks that was built for the troops of WWII. After the war, the barracks were sold off in small sections that are now used around town as homes, storage and office space. Brant’s is currently located on 3913 Brown Ave, Sarasota, Fl. 34231 but keep checking back on the Brant’s Used Bookswebsite for updates. Store hours are Monday-Friday 10:00am – 4:45pm, Saturday 9am – 5pm.
A. Parker’s Books was open in 1980 and has been located in Downtown Sarasota for 30 years. A. Parker’s Books Offer’s rare and antiquarian books. Among their services, they provide Library Design and Collection development. A. Parker’s Books has a knowledgeable staff and has a high level of integrity, so the service is superb. Elysian Fieldswas founded in 1991 with a vision of creating a store that wasn’t like any other store in town but where you could go to have a spiritual journey without the confines of a religion. Elysian Fields offers books and gifts for conscious living. The company sells books and gifts that are related to the metaphysical, which is a branch of philosophy that deals with aspects of nature and reality. Elysian Fields is the only store like it in the Sarasota area, although other stores offer a few metaphysical books but nobody has the amount of material thatElysian Fields have to offer. Elysian Fields is located on the corner of Tamiami Trail and Bahia Vista. Store hours are Monday- Saturday, 10am-6pm and Sunday’s, 12pm-5pm.
Circle Booksis Located on the ever so famous St. Armand’s Circle and opened their doors in July 1999. St. Armand’s is a favorite location to both locals and tourists since it links downtown Sarasota and St. Armand’s circle. St. Armand’s is known all over the world of its high end shops, fine cuisine and tropical environment. Circle Books is the only bookstore serving in the St. Armand’s community and it has earned a very large reputation in the Sarasota community despite how small the store is. Circle Books is a generalist bookstore but it does have a big emphasis on Children’s books, genre, literary fiction and Floridian books. Also, the store maintains signed/ first edition books from some of the most notable authors in the Country. Circle Books is open 7 days a week but hours change depending on the Season. You can call (941).388.2850 for more information. Make sure to sign up for the mailing list as well to keep up with the full schedule of events such as book signings, readings and much, much more.
There are many more bookstores in the city of Sarasota but none of them meet the same standards that these 5 do. They have all stood the test of time in this ever changing city and will be around for many years to come.
