The best advice I ever got was from my husband when he told me there was nothing standing in my way and if I wanted to write, write. “I support you in whatever you want to do, and if it’s something you really enjoy doing you should do it.”
This may not sound like a lot, but for someone who has always struggled with what her role is in the world, it meant a lot to me knowing that he would support me in what would become a freelance writing career full of highs and lows. This is what I’m meant to do and I learn something new every day.
Associated Content on Good Morning America:
I was sitting on my couch one morning – drinking coffee and watching Good Morning America – when they had a segment with Tori Johnson come on about work-at-home opportunities. One of those sites mentioned just happened to be Associated Content. It piqued my interest enough that I went to my desk and pulled the site up on my computer. I took a little tour through the site, looked up outside information on Associated Content, and eventually signed up.
I didn’t write the first couple of months after I signed up, though. I wasn’t sure how or where to start. I spent a lot of time reading other Contributors articles on SEO – this made my head spin – and reading forum posts, learning from others through questions. I finally got up the nerve to ask my own question and from there, I was off.
Still uncomfortable (as evidenced by my earlier work here), I continued reading what others were writing. Everything from SEO to how to write a good title and everything in between. Eventually, I started coming out of the hole I had been living in and decided to just go for it.
The page views were low and lousy for much of the first year I wrote for Associated Content as I struggled to find my niche. I realized that I most liked to write about movies, music, television, and, on occasion, celebrities. I decided to try my hand at writing to the A & E category and was overwhelmed by the positive response my articles were getting.
Since that time, the bulk of what I write has to do with entertainment and I look forward to writing about my favorite television shows, movies, and music.
I’m glad I listened to my husbands advice about doing what I love to do. I’m lucky that I have a husband who is supportive and wants me to achieve my goals as a writer.
Next stop: Writing my novel and getting it published has been a long-time dream of mine. For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to write and publish. Different genres have come to mind, and I’ve actually got a couple different things rolling around in my head right now. It would be amazing to actually get these things down on paper and see my characters come to life, which is why I will be participating in NaNoWriMo 2010. This year, I’m ready for it!
