This article will be discussing the Bantam, the Caldari Nay’s mining frigate, and one of the ships players can purchase and fly in the MMORPG Eve Online. The bantam is one of the first ships new Caldari players to Eve will be capable of flying and is the ideal starting craft for those looking to pursue Industrial, mining or Manufacturing careers.
The Bantam is described in the game as “A strong and sturdy craft, and an extremely effective mining frigate. In addition, its large structure makes it ideal for trading and the Bantam is very popular among budding inter-stellar traders.” The first things to take note, for those interested in a starting vessel for courier or mining tasks are its inherent bonuses, of which it has two. First it has a base role bonus that causes mining lasers to use 60% less capacitor energy with each cycle, and second, for each level in the Caldari Frigate Skill a player possesses the Bantam gets a 5% bonus to cargo capacity, and a 20% bonus to the yield of all equipped mining lasers. The skill requirements for this ship is level 1 in spaceship command and Caldari Frigate level 2, which any new Caldari character will start already having, although Eve recommends players acquire 3 certificates to benefit their use of the bantam, those of which are Core Competency, Resource Harvester and Active Shield Tanking.
For fitting the Bantam, it starts with the following base properties; 150 CPU outpout, 15 powergrid output, 400 calibration, 2 low slots, 2 medium slots, 2 high slots, 2 turret hard points and 3 upgrade hard points for small rigs. The bantam has a 235 m3 cargo capacity, suiting its industrial role considering its frigate size, 5 m3 drone capacity with a 5 mbit bandwidth, allowing it either an extra harvester or defense drone.
Starting players may want to consider a bantam fitted with 2 cargo hold expanders, 2 mining lasers, a shield booster and a scout drone for defense. This setup requires very limited skills, but is also very basic. Some may consider the bantam limited in its capabilities, but I will discuss two excellent load outs created by players on battle clinic. The names of each load out will contain a link to the original battle clinic load out page.
Loadout 1: The Trial Mining Bantam
This load out, submitted by Rathma is designed to allow players on trial accounts to max out their Bantams for ultimate mining potential, since Trial accounts can be limited in their options of what skills they can train, or equipment they can use. This load out is fairly expensive, but a trial player Is capable of grinding the Isk needed for this ship. For cheaper alternatives, there are lower grade items that can be replaced to make this ship load out cheaper. With all relevant skills at level 5, this load out benefits from a 620.m3 hold, capable of mining 408.75 m3 of minerals with each cycle. The trial mining bantam has decent speed for its capabilities, standing at 333 m/s and carries 755 effective hp with an Omni tank of 18 dps. This is certainly the pinnacle in the Bantams mining capabilities.
Loadout 2: Bantam: Death has a name
This load out submitted by Augin Soric is a surprising look at the Bantam, turning it into a vicious pvp attack and tackle ship. This version carries a higher effective HP of 818, but a much lower tank of 1,43 dps, however this vessel is capable of reaching a top speed of 1,034.57 m/s allowing it to effectively speed tank. The warp scrambler allows it to keep pilots from jumping away while they are being attacked. In my opinion this is an excellent load out for a pirate looking to surprise some miner players. The best tactic is to close distance at an angle, so it looks as if you may be mining a nearby asteroid, then, once the scrambler is ready to target your victim, let fly with the scrambler, neutron blaster and drone and maintain a close orbit to lay down the 104.49 dps this ship is capable of. Capacitor drain is no issue, as with all modules operating at once, this vessel can maintain a steady cap flow at 66% indefinitely.
