Sunday June 27 2010 BET (Black Entertainment Television) hosted it’s 10 annual BET Hip Hop Award show, where John Legend, and Prince were both honorees. A show were the former King Of Pop was also remembered. For ten years we have seen BET artist grow and change, and last night’s award show honored that change which as Keri Hilson said “a night of comebacks” and a lovely night it was.
To start the show, we had the infamous Kanye West, with his overly dramatic performance. For someone who loves being in the lime light you could barely tell who it was between the smoke and the lovely pictures Other performers such as Usher, Dirty Money, DJ Khalid and The Dream Team showed us why we spend that money for their records at Best Buy. An amazing performance by T.I. whom if I am not mistaken, this was his first performance since being released from jail. Lil’ Wayne who is serving time in Riker’s Island, his group Young Money went ahead to perform as well, without him, but it was still a beautiful performance.
The show stopping performances came from non other than the beautiful pregnant Alicia Keys who climbed on top of a piano, baby belly and all. She really makes pregnant woman feel sexy, and she gave not one but two amazing performances. Chris Brown, a man who has been in the news for the whole Rhianna scandal killed the show with a moving performance in dedication to the King Of Pop, even though he broke down and cried in the middle of the performance, he gave an amazing show. The fact that this was his come back show in my eyes, because Jermaine Jackson did not even announce him. He is not the best person in the public eyes, and his performance brought tears to every ones eyes.
Then with Janelle Monae, Alicia Keys, Patty Labelle, and Esperanza Spaulding giving an all female tribute to Prince, a man who deserved an award years ago for Purple Rain. A musician who was cheated out of Grammies because he was different. A man who is who changed the way music was then and keeps it changing now. An original musician without all the high tech gadgets of today. My only disappointment, was since he has found religion, he did not perform. A sad event, a really sad event.
El Debarge came out and sang some of his former groups hits, and I LIKED IT. Jada Pinkett Smith gave an award along with the two stunning cast members of Love Jones Lorenz Tate, and Nia Long. Keri Hilson told no lies when she said it was a night for comebacks. Showing us old and new, how ten years has changed the music, the people and the atmosphere. With the UNITY Queen hosting the show, I can not wait to see what next year brings in terms of not only performances, but award winners as well.
