Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and a great treat for mom just may be a trip to the movies. So treat Mom to a large bucket of buttered kernels, a super-size soda, and some Whoppers, and pick the best seats to view your pick of these ten upcoming flicks:
The Back-Up Plan– April 23 release – Jennifer Lopez may have a hit in the making with this quirky romantic comedy that doesn’t respect the old saying, “First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby.” In fact, things are completely in reverse, when the main character, Zoe, wants to have a family and gets pregnant right before meeting Mr. Right. This is the just the kind of romantic comedy my mother would enjoy seeing.
Hey, Hey, It’s Esther Bluebuger – April 23 release – No one can do cute and quirky like the Brits! This English film is a comedy about the difficulty of finding your spot, particularly when you’re an odd teenager who just doesn’t fit in. Every girl who’s ever been a teen (yep, that means your mom) will enjoy this film about Esther Blueburger’s quest to become “normal.”
Paper Man – April 23 release- Jeff Daniels stars in this unusual tale about a flailing author who has a relationship with an imaginary superhero. Out of touch with reality, this writer finally finds friendship with a teenage girl. Through her, he finds his true self and is able to release his tethers to his imaginary hero. This heartwarming film will be just the right movie for any mom.
Mercy – April 30 release – A popular romance writer knows all about fictional love, but continually avoids relationships, and is never willing to take a chance on the real thing … until he meets Mercy. This movie is written and acted by Scott Caan. It looks like it will be a classic romantic drama – the perfect movie for a Mother’s Day trip to the movies.
Please Give – April 30 release – When a Manhattan family purchases the apartment next door in order to knock out some walls and get more living space, they find out they must wait for the current cranky elderly resident, Andra, to die. As the family plays this waiting game, they get to know Andra’s family, and things get complex when the lives of these two families overlap. This story seems to be an interesting mix of comedy and drama – the perfect combination for Mother’s Day movie viewing.
Iron Man 2 – May 7 release – Stop the projectors! Robert Downey, Jr. hits the silver screen again as billionaire Tony Stark/Iron Man. Stark battles the government who want to replicate his Iron Man suit, as well as new super-villains. This Marvel action-adventure is sure to get every mother’s pulse pumping! This would be one of my main picks, but, then again, I’m very partial to Robert Downey, Jr.
Robin Hood – May 14 release – Hollywood’s bad boy (but oh, so scrumptious) Russell Crowe once again joins forces with Ridley Scott (director of Gladiator) to bring to the movie theater another grand epic film. The trailers alone are thrilling enough to get me grabbing my mom’s arm and running to the theater see this movie.
Letters to Juliet – May 14 release – When young Sophie travels to Verona, Italy, the famed city of the star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet, she stumbles upon a letter from 1957. The letter is written to Juliet, requesting advice about love. Sophie replies to the old letter, and begins a series of events that ends in a twist of fate. This looks like a sweet romantic movie that may require a tissue to dab away a tear or two. Bring one for Mom and one for you.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time – May 28 release – Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films team up to bring another epic adventure film to movie audiences. A Persian prince and a mysterious princess work together to battle dark forces – a classic tale of good versus evil that will delight one and all. This film releases after Mother’s Day, so get advance tickets and make a date with Mom.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse – June 30 release – If your mom is one of the many women who are truly taken with the Twilight Sage, there could be no better gift than tickets to opening night for Eclipse, the next movie in the Twilight series. Promise you’ll be ready to escort her, in costume if required! Do whatever it takes to make Mother’s Day 2010 a memorable time for your mom.
