Let’s just begin with the premise that there is no one who can “replace” Oprah Winfrey. There may be someone plugged into the Winfrey time slot with a talk show, but there is no replacement for the queen of talk T.V.
I agree that it is time for Oprah to move on to other ventures. Her tenure as a talk show host has been long and productive. I’m simply saying that not just anyone can be thrown into that syndicated slot and have the same success as Oprah.
Oprah has the unique ability to ask almost any question without being offensive, and, even more impressive, get an answer.
Is Tori Spelling the replacement in waiting for Oprah?
Popstar.com suggests that Tori Spelling might be replacement tapped to replace Oprah. While Tori Spelling is connected to television through her families extensive connections in the business that is no reason to reward her with a talk show from which acclimated viewers will expect solid issues, probing questions, and empathy. I don’t think Tori Spelling can deliver what viewers in that time slot are used to and what they are looking for.
I hope Popstar.com’s suggestion is only a stab in the dark at Oprah’s replacement.
Why Tori Spelling is not a good choice for Oprah’s time slot.
Tori Spelling, the mother of two is always busy, writing and filming her reality TV show, Tori & Dean on the Oxygen network. Popstar considers her warm and personable. Those terms may well describe her, but I do not think she is a woman with whom middle class American women, seeking answers, can relate as they related to Oprah Winfrey.
Just because her personal laundry has been aired nationally, because of her family notoriety, does not equate her struggles with those not born with a silver spoon. Tori Spelling is from a different world and lacks the earthiness that Oprah is able to bring to her talk show, despite her being one of the top money earners in Hollywood.
Oprah Winfrey and Tori Spelling come from two different backgrounds.
Oprah’s background gives her a greater understanding of common people than Tori Spelling will ever have. I doubt that Tori has a clue what it feels like to live paycheck to paycheck or live through crisis after crisis without professional help that can be bought at any price.
For heaven’s sake, Tori cannot even get along with her own mother. Just because she is an elite television insider from the Spelling family does not mean she should fill Oprah’s spot with a talk show of her own.
Frankly, I’d rather watch Oprah re-runs. I hope Popstar.com’s speculation is off base. If not, I’ll never watch a Tori Spelling talk show, except for comic relief. Ellen, get ready to see your ratings climb if this is the move ABC makes.
