The common theme among movie studios desperate for movie ideas is simple. When all else fails, take an old television series with limited success and make it a movie. While it is tough for movie ideas in Hollywood, the television series they have chosen lately have fallen a bit off the mark.
Instead of Land of the Lost why didn’t we make MASH a movie?
Movies such as Land of the Lost starring Will Ferrell and the Dukes of Hazzard were summarily crushed at the box office. With the fervor in which television series are being converted to box office little would surprise me now. There could be a MASH movie–no wait there was a MASH movie then the series.
Well why not bring it full circle and create a new MASH movie based in Iraq. No that probably won’t fly either. Here is a list of five movies based on television series and possible scenarios. If they are already in the works, I apologize. If these ideas end up on the big screen, I expect my cut.
Arrested Development with some key sub plots.
Okay I admit it. I loved this Ron Howard narrated and produced television series. The Bluths were the Cunninghams of the new millennium and were irreplaceable. Whenever I can catch an episode on IFC or HD Net I am glued to the television. Then I watch on Hulu.com when I can’t get my fill. This movie is supposedly in the works but I won’t believe it until I see it.
Possible plot line for the movie.
Michael Bluth has finally escaped the family and is living in Texas. He is working for a property management company but not making much money. He is happy but for some strange reason misses his previous life and yes his family. He packs up and returns, only to find that his father is out of jail and running the company again. His father welcomes Michael back but has returned to his old ways of back door deals shady ways.
The Sopranos never died they return for money.
We all loved the Sopranos until the last episode the fade to black scene in the diner pissed a lot of viewers off. I myself thought it was brilliant. It made the viewer think. the possibilities were endless as to what happens next. My theory is that nothing happened. The show started as it had ended. The family gathered together for a dinner and nothing happens. The fact is since Tony whacked a sitting boss, he will always be looking over his shoulder.
Possible plot line for the movie.
Making a Sopranos movie can be done several ways. It can be taken from the early years, with new actors playing the established characters. This won’t work but I wouldn’t be surprised if the movie studios thought it would work. A movie made like this would bomb.
The best idea is to bring the characters back one year after. Silvio is recovered from his injuries and Paulie is now a captain. Introduce a few more characters and bring Chris back as a narrator and ghost that haunts Tony. In fact, the movie is about Tony’s perceived loose ends that haunt him throughout the movie. Although there is a lot of retribution Tony never suffers and he is bothered that he survives.
Saturday Night Live the Movie.
A movie that deals with the early years of Saturday Night Live. Chevy Chase getting a big head and John Belushi going ballistic at the drop of a hat. It all makes for great cinema. It would take some masterful casing but if the casing is right this could be the movie of the decade. The great thing is that it would introduce a generation to the great comedy minds of the late 70’s and early 80’s that worked on Saturday Night Live.
