Age has finally caught up with Sylvester Stallone. At 63 years old, he’s suddenly realized he’s too old to be an action hero and it’s about time he did something else. According to Showbiz Spy, Sylvester Stallone recently said “At this age I hear the ticking clock and it’s as loud as the gong on Big Ben”.
Stallone wants to transition out of movies, with his latest movie “The Expendables” being his last as an actor. He’s also directing the movie. In the future, he envisages himself doing what Clint Eastwood has done – move from being one Hollywood’s most successful actors to being one of the world’s most successful directors. But can Sylvester Stallone be the next Clint Eastwood?
Personally, I’ve always thought Sylvester Stallone was one of the worst actors on the planet. A one-trick pony, every character he plays looks the same and sounds the same so who you always get up there on screen is Stallone, plain and simple. Apparently, I’m not alone in this opinion as, in 2000, he was given a Razzie award (formerly the ‘Golden Raspberry Award’) for being the “Worst Actor of the Century”. When the Razzie people gave Stallone the award, unlike with most actors where the award is for one particular movie, with Stallone it was given for 95% of what he’s done. Now, you can’t get much worse than that.
So, where does that leave Stallone as a potential director? Surprisingly, it may actually leave him well-prepared for the job and for a future as one of Hollywood’s most talented directors.
Before he started out acting, Stallone was a failed screenwriter. He wrote several screenplays under a couple of different pseudonyms, none of which sold. But, like most screenwriters will tell you, writing a screenplay can actually teach you the difference between a good one and a bad one. If Sylvester Stallone pursues a directing career, having a background in screenwriting may help him choose great screenplays to direct. That alone could head him in the direction of becoming the next Clint Eastwood.
Weirdly, people who are bad actors, like Stallone is, may not see that trait in themselves but they can spot it in other actors. So, just like being a bad screenwriter, being the worst actor of the century could help Stallone become the best director of the century, and what a kick in the pants that would be to the folks behind the Razzie Awards.
Finally, one thing you have to give Sylvester Stallone credit for is he doesn’t give up. When in his 20s, unable to pay rent and with no reputable acting job on the horizon, Stallone acted in a soft porn movie to make enough money so he wouldn’t be kicked out of his apartment. Not one for expecting a handout, over the years that’s given Stallone a drive that seems difficult to stop.
Honestly, I’m not a Sylvester Stallone fan, in any definition of the word. But, as Stallone has endured as one of Hollywood’s most successful and most consistently-working actors, you’ve got to give him credit for that. One thing you can say about Stallone is he’s always full of surprises. So, who knows? Maybe wanting to become a top director, like Clint, may be something Stallone can achieve. Let’s reserve judgment, wish him well and see.
