In Chesterton, Indiana there are many places for college students to obtain summer work. One of my favorite places to visit is the local family owned Chesterton Feed and Grain Garden Center, located at 400 Locust Street. They are an excellent source for all your garden needs. They are open year around and carry an array of items such as a large selection of bird seed and accessories, a specialty pet food section to accent the pet section, a huge indoor/outdoor nursery with just about any kind of tree or plant that could possibly be needed, a huge gift center, lawn care products, and an extensive section for water gardens. In the winter months, Christmas trees are sold along with seasonal winter supplies with their everyday inventory, as well as unique gifts. They need people who can work in the summer months who can lift at least 50 pounds. The owner is very flexible with his schedule and sometimes when school starts, he keeps employees for part-time help on the week-ends or needs extra help during the holiday season. I have been told my many people Chuck is a very good person to work for.
Another great summer place to work and eat at is The Port Drive In located at 419 Calumet Avenue. It was first opened in 1953 and as time went by it was sold and now is a B & K Root Beer Stand which displays an old fashioned mug on the top of the orange canopy which hungry people park their car and order from a car hop. They have cold, cold frosty mugs of root beer, black cow floats, a huge menu selection of hot dogs, hamburgers, fried veggies, double hamburgers, dinners, and ice cream (to name a few) and to help out with the cost, they offer printable coupons. They are open all day long and into the night hours and they are always looking for help. On their website you can fill out an application.
The Chesterton Tribune is a local newspaper and its small office is located at 1935 Calumet Avenue. The circulation rate is 4,833 copies which are delivered to residents and some close neighboring communities. In the want ads they say a person can make $300 a week and delivery is only five days a week. This would be a flexible position that may last longer than a summer job if it could be worked into a schedule because delivery can be made at your convenience as long as it is within reasonable daytime hours.
If you are the outdoors type of person there is the Indiana Dunes State Park in Porter (a section of Chesterton) located at 1600 N 25 E. They are always needing dependable part-time summer help for grounds maintenance, gate attendance, and security guards. This is a very, very friendly environment and if you have pets, they encourage you to bring your pet to work with you. The flexible shifts begin around 6:00am and end at 11:00 pm. This would be a fantastic job for somebody who loves nature and helping people. You can fill out an application on their web site.
If you are an animal person an excellent veterinarian is The Chesterton Animal Hospital located at 1008 Broadway. Dr. Selim Soliman, DVM is a very caring person who goes out of his way to help all animals weather they are his regular patients or if somebody has an emergency situation. He has been practicing for a long time, is respected and his prices are reasonable. He sometimes needs animal caregivers to help walk dogs, clean cages or help with feeding or general care of the animals. This would be an excellent opportunity for somebody who loves the animals and wants help them as well as working with a friendly, caring and helpful staff.
