One of the most expensive things about college is not the tuition but the cost of textbooks. There are may ways you can help to lower the cost of your textbooks and save some money. Just follow these suggestions and you will save plenty of money with these tips for getting the most money for your text book.
1. Sale back to school
This is not the highest paying way to sale a book but it is one of the easiest. Some school will buy a book back regardless of if it is going to be used again or not but they will offer ridiculously low prices. Sometimes it is better to just keep the book. I knew someone who was offered only a few cents for a book from the school bookstore.
2. Local bookstores
Many but not all school have a local book store in the area that will sale books and buy books for less then the school bookstore. These stores are very popular, offer great deals, and it is easy to get money from them. If there is no store like that in your area you can always go to another school and find one even though they are not your schools books they probably still need them. In my area three community colleges of five in the area had such stores so I would take my book to one of the other schools it was a half hour drive but well worth the money I got back.
Craiglist is a good place to post your books since it is regional and if you go under the book section you will see lots of books being sold this way. This is also a good place to buy the books from too.
4. Post at school
Many schools have some kind of message board and anyone can post that they want to sale or buy books, along with other posts as well that may end up on the boards.
5. Fellow students
Ask friends or fellow students they may need to take the class next semester, or even know someone who does. I have been involved in some of these transactions and seen lots of them happen. Its a situation where everyone wins often you find out the price the book is, see what the bookstore would give you then you have them pay right in the middle and everyone wins.
Half.com is a good option to sale your book. It will improve your ebay feedback too.
Amazon.com is another great place to sale your used books online.
8. Used bookstore
Most cities have used bookstores. They may be picky about what they pay you for instead of give you store credit for but for school books which are easy to sale they are more likely to give you cash.
9. Online book exchange
Some schools do have local book exchanges but I think it is rare. Many sites exist like bookmooch where you can trade books. Of course there are tons of books that you can trade this way that are textbooks. So you can trade a $100 textbook you would get $10 at the school bookstore or $20 at a off-campus store and pay $10 to ship and get a $80 book you need for next semester and you still save $50!
How is donating books going to help? Well easy you get a slip and use it for a tax write-off, it might not be much but could save you more later then you would get from the school bookstore.
