Well, once again, I have to put my scientific reputation on the line, which is not hard to do, as I have no scientific reputation, unless you count that nasty little explosion in the high school chemistry lab.
But I am bound and determined, but if my keepers untie me, I will just be determined.
Anyway, studies showing that a series of concussions can cause permanent brain damage are wrong. One study states that ‘ Concussions, whether from an accident, sporting event, or combat, can lead to permanent loss of higher level mental processes…”
Please, and this is the truth, I have had eleven concussions. In fact after the last concussion, my neurologist told me to stop drinking. I did, what anyone who has a higher level mental process would do. I changed neurologists.
But I have seen no change in my “higher level mental processes.” Of course, it could be argued that I never had any “higher level mental processes” .If I did, I wouldn’t have been hit on the head so much.
I would give you a short history of my concussions, but I can’t remember. Hey – memory is different that a higher level mental process, so quit snickering. Or at least put the Snickers down and have a Milky Way.
But I digress. To show how much medicine has changed, my first concussion happened when I was riding a bike and got hit by a car. I was thrown across the street and woke up to see my brother staring at me, as it was his new bike I was riding, but it was now a twisted piece of metal. But maybe the brakes still worked. That was my initial thought when coming out of the concussion.
Now I have been hit by a car, tossed across the street, landed on my head, My mother simply said, “Can you walk?” I nodded, walked home, got in the car, went to see the doctor who checked my eyes, said I would be fine, but I should drink skim milk for a while.
Today, I would be treated by paramedics, given CAT scans and DOG scans and would run up a huge medical bill. I think my mother paid the doctor ten dollars, I went home and lay in bed all day and drank skim milk.
My last concussion was due to another car accident and I was in a coma for a few days and I remember nothing about the accident, the hospital or even coming home. I do remember that a few weeks later, the nice people at the hospital sent me a survey, asking me how my stay at the hospital was. Because I had no idea, I simply filled out the form and said they needed stronger. drugs .
Oh yes, the latest concussion studies also say that people who suffer a concussion may show signs of “behavioral abnormalities.” I think we won’t even go there, or at least wait until I am released back into society.
