California has a storehouse of well-known tourists spots; places people visit from all over the world; cities like San Francisco, Hollywood and Santa Barbara. This year for your vacation, leave the beaten path and discover hidden gems peppered throughout the state that many tourists miss. One such place worth visiting is a tiny town called Big Flat.
Big Flat is a mountain town located in the Trinity National Forest, on the banks of the rushing, crystal clear water of the Trinity River; home to Salmon, Steelhead and Trout. Here there are many outdoor activities to enjoy including: rafting, kayaking, hiking, fishing, swimming and panning for gold.
Visiting Big Flat takes you off the main highway, up through the back road wilderness as you wind your way through mountains dense with pines. Here you leave behind the hustle and bustle of daily life, retreating to a forested paradise where birds chirp in the hushed quiet of the morning; Bald Eagles fly to nests in craggy rocks; and life wakes gently by the rising sun cresting over tall mountain peaks. Not far up the road from Big Flat is a retreat that allows you to experience all of this and more.
Located only 65 miles north from Redding via Highway 5 is the Strawhouse Resort and Cafe. Here you will find fully furnished, cozy cottages set in the backdrop of the Trinity Forest, with an impressive view of the rushing Trinity River. There are also 7 RV sites on the property with full hook-ups, including wireless internet, each located in a private setting.
Wake in the morning to the tempting smell of fresh coffee wafting on the breeze from the Strawhouse Café‘s own in-house coffee bean roaster. They offer organic specialty coffees along with hearty breakfast and lunch fare (dinner is offered by advanced reservation only) all with a focus on healthy and organic foods. They also sell bagged, fresh Strawhouse Coffee that you can take home (and continue to enjoy after your trip by ordering via their website).
The “Strawhouse is a dream, or better yet a calling on life. Strawhouse was created with the idea that one’s business and actions should benefit the community. With that in mind, in 1998, a diamond in the rough was purchased, and as the edges got chipped and shaped, a most beautiful property has emerged. Blessed by God Himself, Strawhouse has sent its roots deep into the very fabric of Trinity County,” according to the founder and builder Don Ellis who has now realized his dream and answered the call.
Ellis, along with the hard work of many friends and volunteers over the years created the ever evolving Strawhouse Resort where you can enjoy the beauty and activities of the Trinity River located just steps from the spacious patio on the backside of the Strawhouse Café. While you are there, ask for a tour of the impressive coffee roasting operation that Ellis has created and see stacks of bagged beans from some of the finest organic coffee growers in the world.
