Start a Car Detailing Business guide.
I get a lot of e-mails asking about Starting an Auto Detailing Business.
When running your own Detailing Business you feel in control. You will feel the pride of being your own boss and having a business of your own.
Detailing cars for business is hard work but if you like it enough it can be very rewarding. The work is not leasy and will keep you in good physical shape. You will be able to practice your craft and learn new techniques as well.
Auto Detailing as a business has diffrent circumstances and you will have to change your techniques. It is not the same as working on your own cars. The equipment that was good for occasional detailing jobs might not last long under the stress of full time use. Materials and supplies will be used up much quicker so purchasing and using them will have to be done differently. Also, since in business time is money, how you do things and what you do becomes part of the mix. You better not sacrifice quality, but as a professional you will want to use techniques and procedures that enable you to offer a great job and a competitive price.
Starting out is relatively easy and does not require large outlays of cash. Going mobile is what I’m going to tell you about here:
It is very easy to start with a car or small truck and do it at peoples homes or work. Not having water in all the placs people will want their cars done wil limit you. You can start carrying your own water supply as some detailers do. A portable canopy is a good idea as detailing in the hot sun is not the right way to go.
– It doesnt matter if you are operating from your car or truck, either way you have to look good. People have to see that you are proffesional and that your own car looks great. It speaks volumes when a detailers car is well maintained at all times.
– You have to know “How to Sell” because selling your services is a large part of your job as a detailer. You will have to spend lots of time selling yourself as well as your services. When talking to a customer, walk around the car with them and point out all the problems you see and tell them exactly what you can do to correct them. Also point out stains or other problem areas in the interior and offer to take care of them. If you do a good job your customers will come back to you for more business and refer you to their friends and family.
– Offer maintenance contracts. Weekly or by-weekly washing and or waxing of the car if the customer would want that. With a maintenance program you will wash their car once a week and wax it once or twice a month along with other tasks for a set price, including a discount, up front.
