This StarCraft 2: Wings Of Liberty mission guide will cover ‘Outbreak’, providing the objectives, achievements and a walk-through of how I beat this mission on hard difficulty during my own play through. Outbreak is the second mission in the Colonist chain in StarCraft 2: Wings Of Liberty and begins with Dr. Alice Hanson and Jim Raynor discovering an infection on the planet Meinhoff that is taking over the buildings in a refugee camp. They discover that the Zerg are infesting the area and turning the populace into zombie-like creations that have to be destroyed. The infected civilians are susceptible to the light however, and will be vanquished by the UV radiation during the day. The objectives of Outbreak in StarCraft 2: Wings Of Liberty will be to attack the infested structures during the day, and defend from the attacking infested horde during the night.
Outbreak in StarCraft 2: Wings Of Liberty begins with a well built central base consisting of 2 refineries, several SCVs along with a command center, two barracks, sensor tower, some supply centers and a variety of Medics, Marines and Firebats. Outbreak in StarCraft 2: Wings Of Liberty begins 30 seconds till night, and as such, the infested refugees start attacking in full swing almost immediately. The waves are stronger depending on the current number of infested structures left standing, and throughout the mission, will diminish as these buildings are destroyed, making this mission different than most defense missions, where waves get more numerous later on.
My first task is to start producing SCVs en masse to fuel a large army in order to net the most difficult of the two achievements, 28 minutes later requiring I complete the mission by the 5th night, and army of darkness requiring 15 infested structures be destroyed at night while the infested are attacking. Attacking the infested structures at night cause additional units to spawn from the structures, so you will need some serious guns to pull this off. The first night in Outbreak I spend massing my minerals, some light army building, putting up 2 bunkers to defend the entrances and calling in mercenaries, since they get more bang for each used supply. In addition to this, I make sure to get upgrades at the engineering bay researched ASAP since I want my units in the best shape to attack at night.
In the last minute of Night 1, a factory drops down along with 4 Hellions, unlocking the ability to construct this new unit, previously unavailable. These units are particularly effective against the infected, thanks to their area of effect attack ability. Day 1 is spent building supply centers and units, as for the Army of Darkness achievement I will need to wait until night, to make sure I can accomplish this hardest achievement first. I use the 4 hellions to scout out the area and pick the buildings I want to attack the second night drops. Once its 30 seconds to night I move my army into position and set upon the buildings as soon as it hits night time. I have picked a group of buildings to the right, and slowly cut a path further out of the way of other incoming units to limit the amount of fighting my away team has to do, down towards the left Infestor and acquiring the Zerg research point its destruction offers.
Day 2 ends up flash-firing a large amount of infested as they crawled through my base almost about to overcome my defenses, so now it’s time for recuperation, rebuilding the destroyed bunkers and continuing to plow through infested structures to thin their numbers for the following night. Day 2 allows me to clear through most of the right side of the map, but unfortunately, eagerness overcame me and I pursued their destruction into the night, meaning my army now split into 2 groups was quickly wiped out. Take my mistake as advice, pull those armies back lest you have a concise group and are still pursuing the achievement. Also take note, Aberrations begin appearing at this point, and can really mess up your units. Night 3 posses a surprise when the infested break through the barricade at the back of your base during the last minute. Be prepared for this.
Once the mission reaches night 4, my mineral fields have depleted, so I take over an open field from a cleared infested base to the north to maintain army production even as the numbers of attacking enemy units has dwindled down to a very manageable number. Although I missed it in this play-through, this would be a perfect time to make an attempt on the final Infestor, since day 4 makes it time to wipe out the remaining structures to complete the mission and claim my two achievements.
