This StarCraft 2: Wings Of Liberty mission guide will cover ‘Engine of Destruction’ providing the objectives, achievements (Engine of Destruction, Kicking Asgard, Ragnarok & Roll) and a walk-through of how I beat this mission on hard difficulty during my own play through to satisfy all these achievements. Engine of Destruction is the 3rd mission in the Rebellion mission chain in StarCraft 2: Wings Of Liberty following Cutthroat. Taking place on the planet of Valhalla Engine of Destruction revolves around the Raynor’s Raiders attempt to steal and break out with an experimental vehicle called the Odin.
Engine of Destruction in StarCraft 2 begins with me in charge of a small group of Marines and Medics supporting Tychus Findlay as he makes his first appearance as an in-game unit, being a massive Marine armed with a powerful chain gun. I follow him in, letting Tychus take the lead and soaking up damage while my Marines support him and Medics heal the damage he takes. Around a bend inside the first enemy base lies a Devourer Tissue sample, the first of three that will give Zerg research points as a reward for picking them up throughout Engine of Destruction in StarCraft 2.
A pair of Perdition turrets guards the opening to the Hangar where the Odin lies in wait, but unable to do much to Tychus while the Medics are supporting him. Once the hangar bay is clear of enemy units, Tychus activates a beacon that assembles the Odin, and after getting in, decides to blast the bases exit gates open, unable to receive transmissions from Raynor, as he has his communications stuck on transmit. After he blows the gate, Matt informs me of the Dominion base defenses coming online, and I’m granted a starting base to begin normal production operations to produce units to support Tychus rampage.
Once the in-game cut scene is over, a health bar is displayed at the top of the screen showing the Odin’s health remaining, and I get started constructing more SCVs and a second automated refinery. Around this time I’m informed of two enemy Battlecruisers on their way to attack the Odin, marked on the mini-map as they make their progress. Rory Swann chimes in to provide me with 4 Wraith fighters to counter the Battlecruisers and unlocking the ability to build them at my Starports. Now that I have researched Tech Reactors through the Protoss research tree, I add these to my Starport along with a second Starport that begins construction, to produce 2 Wraiths at a time.
The first thing I train is two Science Vessels for their vehicle repair abilities, while Tychus takes the Odin on another rampage, followed by a small group of my Marines and Medics from earlier, and the 4 Wraiths granted to me. I send the Science Vessels to guard the Odin as soon as they come off the line.
Having the Science Vessels guarding and constantly repairing the Odin lets me focus on base production way more, throwing up a second Command Center to lift off and land at an expansion area later and an Armory to upgrade ships and vehicles. Some small waves come to attack my base, but having 6 Marines in a single Bunker allows me to hold them off, diverting SCVs for repairs as needed. I take the time to add a second bunker and some more troops for defense for later waves. I also have sent an SCV to guard and repair the Odin, whom along with the Medics and Science Vessels, stay relatively safe given their not attacking the enemy while the Odin itself is ripping everything to pieces.
I make sure to construct more Wraiths as I send a newly produced group of 4 to replace the first group that bit the dust sometime in the attack. While the Odin is clearing this northern base, where an expansion area exists, I move some troops to the right to pick up Zerg research number 2 before rejoining the Odin’s advance. Tychus makes his way south until he is just north of my base, before stopping to take another break. I take this time to fend off some attacking waves and training SCVs for my expansion base and laying down an Automated Refinery on each vespene geyser there.
As more attack units roll of the production lines, they are sent out to join Tychus, now with Diamondbacks and Goliaths I started training at my Factory. I make sure to keep adding a Science Vessel to the guardians to not only repair Tychus, but the other vehicles guarding him. Also, adding a second Armory helps to increase research capabilities. Mineral pallets are scattered throughout this mission and can provide a decent boost.
When Tychus makes the next advance pushing his way south along the right of the map, I’m able to divert a unit to pick up the third Zerg research item in this mission. The supporting Science Vessels and SCVs keep Tychus’ health regenerating quickly whenever he takes damage. Once he takes his last break at the bottom right of the map, I send my guardians north a bit, to engage the Loki there. I lose a single Science Vessel in the fray, but my Wraiths and Goliaths proved a formidable opponent to the Loki, taking it down quick and unlocking the Kicking Asgard achievement in game.
After sending my army back to guarding duties, I call in some Viking mercenaries to ward off an attacking squad of Dominion Vikings at my expansion base. Once this is handled, I send them with Tychus, who has begun the final push into the remaining base. An enemy Battlecruiser exists here that begins to charge its Yamato Cannon to fire at Tychus, but quickly diverting my Wraiths stops him before he can release the shot. From here on it’s a piece of cake, until Tychus hits the big button with the skull on it, nuking the leftovers of the base and ending the mission Engine of Destruction.

StarCraft 2: Wings Of Liberty ‘Engine of Destruction’ Objectives
Escort Tychus to the Odin: Easy and basically takes a minute or two in the first part of the mission. As long as he is alive, he will make his way there on his own.
Tychus Must Survive: Keep theMedics near him and he will be fine, as he can soak up a lot of damage and has a powerful weapon. I’m sure he would also appreciate the support of the Marines.
Destroy All Dominion Bases: Tychus and his Odin will actually be taking care of this for you in Engine of Destruction. Just keep him alive to do his work, and support craft to take down Battlecruisers and cause more destruction overall.
Odin Must Survive: Keep units to defend the Odin, and SCVs to repair it constantly. Having Science Vessels is incredibly helpful in this mission, as they will keep the Odin in great shape.
Find and Destroy the Loki (Bonus): Bring a decent sized anti air capable squad north of the break spot the Odin takes before assaulting the 5th base. It will take off and begin to engage your units immediately. A nice mix of Goliaths and Wraiths with Science Vessel support ended the Loki pretty fast for me.
Find Devourer Tissue Samples (3, Bonus): Finding all three of these items (whose locations are discussed earlier) grants 3 Zerg research for this mission, and is essential to get the Engine of Destruction achievement.
StarCraft 2: Wings Of Liberty ‘Engine of Destruction’ Achievements
Engine of Destruction: Complete all mission objectives in a single play through of this mission on any difficulty to unlock this 15 point achievement.
Kicking Asgard: Find and destroy the Loki Battlecruiser in this mission (located in the 4th base, north of where the Odin comes to rest after its destruction) on normal or higher difficulty to unlock this 10 point achievement. Wraiths and Goliaths with Science Vessel support work very well against it.
Ragnarok & Roll: Don’tlet the Odin drop below 30% health at any point in this mission on hard or higher difficulty to unlock this 10 point achievement. Keep plenty of other attack units to draw fire from the Odin, along with SCVs to repair it constantly and Science Vessels as well.
