It’s June and the summer is here and in full swing. I can already feel the sun on my face as I am driving through the countryside with the top down on the convertible. Summer is my favorite season and every year, I strive to get the most out of the summer. If you want to get the most out of your summer, try some of these activities:
Whatever you do, do it outside. The weather in the summer is far too nice to spend it indoors. Each year, beginning in March, my family and I plant a garden in the yard. By June, the lettuce, radishes, and green onions are ready to harvest. My family and I call this “salad season” because we eat fresh vegetable salads with nearly every meal. If you don’t have a garden or a green thumb, you can still experience salad season by visiting any of the many local Farmer’s Markets in the greater St. Louis Area. One of my favorites is The Soulard Market. Patrons of the market can really get a deal on fresh produce late in the afternoon on Saturdays about an hour before they close. The Soulard Market is an old fashioned open air market in The City of St. Louis. Imagine getting the opportunity to do your grocery shopping outdoors.
In addition to being outside in our garden during the summer months, my family and I also like to enjoy outside entertainment. One of the great opportunities for outside entertainment during this summer season is Union Station’s “Twilight Under the Train Shed Free Movie Series.” On the first Friday of the month from April through September, a free movie will be playing at Union Station on the Lake Stage at Twilight. For more information about Union Station’s “Twilight Under the Train Shed Free Movie Series,” visit their website at: www.stlouisunionstation.com
Not only can patrons of Union Station see free movies during the first Friday of each month from April through September, but patrons can also go to The Hard Rock Café and experience free live music during The Hard Rock Café’s “Party on the Patio” celebration. From 6pm until 8pm every Friday, The Hard Rock Café will have the best of St. Louis’ local music scene performing. Want to see their entertainment schedule, visit their website at www.stlouisunionstation.com
Friday night is no good for you? Well, don’t fret. Not only will there be live entertainment at Union Station each Friday night from June through September, but there will also be free concerts every third Thursday of each month April through September on the Lake Stage from 5:30pm-8pm. For more information on the “Sounds at the Station Free Concert Series,” visit their website at www.stlousiunionstation.com
Wanna leave the city for a weekend getaway? Summer just wouldn’t be summer without a camping trip. When my family and I get the urge to go camping, we go to Bearcat’s Getaway in Lesterville, Missouri. When you arrive at Bearcat’s, you get all the free firewood that you can burn at your campsite. In addition, every Saturday night, Bearcat’s has some of the best entertainment in the State of Missouri on their stage. At BeBe’s Black River Beach Club and Bistro, you can get an awesome meal on Saturday nights (the meals are theme based during their many music festivals). In addition, after hearing a great band on Saturday night, you can wake up on Sunday morning and walk over to BeBe’s for an authentic country style breakfast with sausage and eggs, biscuits and gravy, and the whole nine yards. Don’t spend the summer indoors. Spend it outside with your family and take in some of these wonderful activities in the St. Louis metro area.
