6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
6:15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
6:19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,
6:20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
Application: The world that we live in is a place of constant turmoil, especially in reference to the spiritual side of life. For the unbeliever, at best they live in ignorance. They do not know the peace of God and can never fully be at rest within themselves, but since they do not know what it is they are missing, they learn to live without it. The Devil uses the temptations and the cares of this world to keep the masses blinded to their souls’ condition.
For those of us that are saved, the Devil actively engages us in spiritual warfare. He and his minions do everything in their power to keep us confused, frightened, or distracted to ensure that we can’t fulfill the command of our Lord Jesus Christ. We have to get victory over the fiery darts that the Devil hurls at our mind and at the temptations he drops at our feet, otherwise we will never share the Gospel as we should and our testimony will become questionable.
Ephesians tells us our strength comes from the Lord and commands us to be strong in Him. This can only be accomplished by spending time with God in His word and in prayer. This enables us to put on the armour of God that Paul describes here. Notice the following characteristics; Truth, Righteousness, Peace, Faith, salvation, and the Word of God. We know that Jesus is the truth. He is the only one who is righteous. He is the author of peace. He is the giver of salvation. He is the source of our faith, and He is the Word. Thusly the whole armor of God is Jesus Christ Himself. As believers we are stronger when we walk close to the Lord enabling His presence to protect us.
God has provided for us as believers the tools needed for both spiritual offense and defense. Christ Himself is our shield, and through His word He is our sword as well. For a moment I would like to talk about the shield of faith. It is different from the rest of the armor of god because it is a proactive piece of gear. The believer must choose to use it. If the devil throws fiery darts of doubt into your mind, it is up to you to dismiss them by faith and to defeat them with Word of God. This is not an easy task, but one that we must learn to accomplish in order to be able to enjoy this life that God has given as well as to accomplish His will in this world. Lord Jesus strengthen us to walk in the power of your presence and to use the tools that you have given us to be able to overcome spiritual warfare both now and in the future. Amen
